Patrick Bodmer and Philipp Jung on their mixing process: "On one CD, it's hard to capture everything you want to do within a certain amount of minutes. We try to always be – well, not to be minimal, of course not, because that's not us, but – we try to be subtle. We like to pick tracks that can exist for themselves, but which make a really nice flow for the whole mix. And you don't want to overdo it and only play the hits or too much melody...a mix should gently take you by the hand and say 'hey, this is our interpretation of the actual sound' - bit of the old stuff, bit of the new stuff. It shouldn't overload you but still it should make you move your butt."

I was in the kitchen peeling shrimp to this last night... and it was pretty nice! "Subtle" is a good way to describe it I think. The ending tracks are vry nice imho.

Can't hold a candle to "At the Controls" but I don't believe they were trying for that anyway.

Is fatboy slim doing the next one?

jim, Saturday, 26 January 2008 02:44 (eighteen years ago)

That's what you think of mandy!?

Dan I., Saturday, 26 January 2008 09:52 (eighteen years ago)

i clamor for a fatboy slim mix in 2008 right about now

tremendoid, Saturday, 26 January 2008 09:59 (eighteen years ago)

cut me a slice of that Fatboy Slim Rockefeller Skank.

I was on the wind-up there. Sorry.

What's this supposed to mean exactly, the melody part I mean. I don't see anything inherently wrong about having consistently melodic tracks throughout a mix? I dunno, I get the feeling some people tend to think "if it's too melodic then it's trance or prog"* which is bullshit, or that having melody makes something less danceable (while assuming that undanceability is inherently bad). I dunno, I tend to be a bit of a geirist, I guess. For some reason, a MANDY mix CD lacks appeal to me, even though I've seen them live, and heard many a mix, and they are really great DJ's.

*this is largely based on mistress barbara interview I once saw in which she essentially used melody and trance interchangeably.

t/f: mike skinner uses "subtle" as slang for "boring"

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 27 January 2008 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

my friends and i use "subtle" as slang for "nonexistent" sometimes, which was sorta how i felt about the tiefschwarz fabric mix.

nobody had much to say about booka shade's dj kicks

I have a (very belated) review forthcoming. It's good. Not very subtle, but less anthemic than their live show. About as subtle as their second album maybe.

The first Body Language mix = subtlety done right, because after a while it stopped sounding subtle. Someone on ILM had a great line about it revealing "hidden shallows" over time.

I thought their Mixmag mix was poor but it was actually fairly unsubtle - just too many second-tier tunes.

Their Resident Advisor mix was pretty great - esp. that Freaks track. Can't remember what it's called, but goes "And I really don't remember... what it was... that we fought about.... anymore..." I think it was a remix of something.

Step away from the glowsticks, Tiësto.

I like this. It has a sort of...melancholic feel in parts. It's quite hypnotic in parts (around half way through), which is always welcome. I agree (upthread) about the forgettable Tiefschwarz mix. This will have more staying power, for me at least.
