I LOVE "LORELEI".

I think I tried to revive a Tom Tom Club thread about a month ago to rave about how remarkably good the album is besides "Genius of Love" and "Wordy Rappinghood", which are the only tracks that ever seem to get any mention. "As Above, So Below" is really strong.

I like "As Above, So Below" a lot, but, yeah, I'm going to choose the obvious thing here.

no fans of this album?

I heart Booming & Zooming. Plus the rest of the whole album (besides Under The Bordwalk).

Yeah, "Booming & Zooming" would win, if "Genius of Love" weren't on this album. Seriously, why bother?

Doctor Casino, Monday, 4 February 2008 08:18 (sixteen years ago) link

A full four of the songs in this poll are not even on this album!

Voted Genius, of course, but I really like On, On, On, On... Or maybe I just remember it because it was the b-side to something.

2nd album. now there's a poll i'd like to see some cold hard results from.

Wonderful album. Not sure why "Booming and Zooming" would take it over "Wordy Rappinghood" except that the former has that synth that fills up all the space in your brain. I would like to see this album reissued. Close to the Bone too (although the master tapes apparently are missing).

look, I love this album as much as anyone on earth, but "Genius of Love" is like, one of the five best songs ever written and if it doesn't get 100% of the votes I will cut my face off and feed it to a dog.

Which is the thread upon which people comment on Chris’s book?

I think you and I were the only ones who mentioned the book here
Talking Heads- Classic or Dud?

I am interested but a Guardian interview / preview seemed to make out it was mostly one big diss to David Byrne and/or other musicians at the time (which I'm sure it's not and that that was just the article's angle)

Oh yeah, we were talking about it over there, thanks. Was recently mentioned here as well. Instances where you can't separate the art from the artist. vs. instances where you can.

It's not just a long dis about DB. He says some nice things about Robert Palmer, his neighbor in the Bahamas, for one thing.

I got the book recently, looking forward to reading it. Start discussing it wherever you like, though!

willem, Monday, 28 September 2020 15:20 (three years ago) link

The descrips of his and Tina's lives in downtown NY and the making of the Tom Tom Club records are particularly vivid, DB does get quite a lot of stick (as well as praise)

His arc in the book sorta goes: socially awkward geek>almost certainly autustic>deperate to impress>slightly disingenuous and pretentious>double crossing cocaine-y art-wank asshole>sole architect of TH dissolution

Listened to an interview with Frantz re:the book on that Kreative Kontrol podcast and it was definitely snark city w/r/t Byrne. I'll still probably check out the book, but I just find Frantz & Weymouth's endless focus on zinging Byrne to be tiresome. You could hear him rolling his eyes saying things like "David's too important to do a gig with his old band, he's on the BROADWAY STAGE now dontchaknow, har har". And while obviously Byrne is a weird guy and must have been difficult to be in a band with after a certain point, I don't know how many more times I need to them grind that particular axe.

Its weird to me that Frantz still seems just utterly baffled that Byrne doesn't want to do reunion gigs. In the interview I heard he framed it like "can you BELIEVE what an irrational weirdo this guy is? No one can understand his alien mind!" And its just like yeah, whether you agree or not, is it that hard to grasp how he could be having more fun doing his successful and interesting solo career, versus doing cruises and festival gigs with a band where 1/2 the members seem to kind of lowkeyhate him?
