Always seems to me there's a lot of division about Liars' discography, without a clear consensus for their "best" album. So let's see what ILM thinks. Vote for your favorite album, or best album, or whatever. Go!

Drum's Not Dead gets me every time. I pretty much like all 4 of em, though. Such a wide variety of sound for a band with only 4 albums, too (not that that's necessarily a good thing in itself, but I happen to think they pull it off pretty well).

So far, I've spent the most time with They Were Wrong.... But I've yet to give the new one a fair shake, so who knows?

contenderizer, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:00 (eighteen years ago)

They Were Wrong, for "Broken Witch" and "There's Always Room..." alone.

Simon H., Monday, 28 January 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

They Were Wrong and Drum's Not Dead, a toss-up between those two.

Z S, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

this is a lot harder than it seems. they're all kinda perfect in their own way. but i think i'll go with "they were wrong", cause it's so spooky.

Creeztophair, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

They were wrong.. the rolling stone review was v. funny. "a record you fear listening to"

i wanna get into todd rundgren but he always looks so goddamn.....punchable

M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

definitely they were wrong... i jammed that record so much as soon as it came out, for like the next two years. really really high-quality second album.

xp todd rundgren rules!

69, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

i loved the latest one. all 4 were great. i think i would rank them S/T, Drums, They threw us in a trench, they were wrong. not because they were wrong is a bad album i just spent a lot more time with the others.

gman, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

They Were Wrong... I love that album to DEATH

stevie, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

they were wrong is my favorite also. the press made it out like liars had a great debut (they did), then fell off on the second album (they didn't) and had an awesome (yes) comeback (no) with the third album. but i disagree, the second one was their best. so i guess the album considered their worst by some is gonna win here, based on the comments so far. but ya never know what the lurkers will go for; maybe drum's not dead, i would guess.

stephen, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

i.e., ilm in contrarianism shockah

stephen, Monday, 28 January 2008 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

i think that perception came from pitchfork; 'they were wrong' caught pitchfork off guard, right at that moment before they seemed to realize they had to get more hip and stop being so smug.

i'm gonna give my plug to the debut. for the basslines and the sheer catchiness of it all

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 07:11 (eighteen years ago)

they were wrong

sleep, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

They were a Boston garage rock band (the Lyres). And they kicked a man-sized platter of ass. Hear them here.

this lil' bugger ain't no joke either:

^^^^^^ OTNOM NOM NOM both bands at their peak

69, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

Where is the rumored sequel to "Atheists"? I like the Liars singles, too. Like the "Fins to make us more fishlike" or whatever. And there was another one, I think. The transitional releases between "They threw us all in a trench..." and "They were wrong..." They should compile those.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

They Were Wrong is my choice as well. I was just reading an ILM thread about the record yesterday and the consensus seemed to agree with the RS/Spin pannings. Funny how things change, eh?

circa1916, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

(tie) drums/wrong

band i'm in was lucky enough to open up for the liars/no age show last night. as usual, they were fantastic and they played 3 songs from 'they were wrong, so we drowned', which made me happy. (album i voted for)

6335, Saturday, 2 February 2008 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

They're one of the best bands out there today... but the 2nd album strongly gets my vote.

Nate Carson, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:42 (eighteen years ago)

Second album was so generally panned, they ended up giving it away on their website for a while. But it hit me as hard as Halber Mensch and Trudge and totally got me reconsidering (early) industrial music.

ILX System, Sunday, 3 February 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

The one that got the worst reviews earned the most votes. Cool.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 3 February 2008 02:25 (eighteen years ago)

getting such insanely negative reviews from Spin and Rolling stone must mean you're doing something right.

Vas Djifrens, Sunday, 3 February 2008 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

they do not understand the dark ways

Vas Djifrens, Sunday, 3 February 2008 03:17 (eighteen years ago)

wow no mercy for s/t....im still loving that album

gman, Friday, 15 February 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

the newest one did not get enough love, it is v. v. good.

kenan, Friday, 15 February 2008 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

OTM--I think the s/t is a really unlikely album to come out in 2007. Its heart is totally in the mid 80's and the songs are all awesome while also seeming almost totally spontaneous. I have no idea if they worked these tracks out in a day or 6 months, and that's a really great feeling.

They are also of course on tour slaying the country right now. I had never seen them and damn what a good show. Cool to hear stuff from each of the last three albums--someone unfamiliar with their work could have walked into the show at many different points and gotten a developed a completely different conception of the band. Angus, from his chair, kept on talking about Boston sports in between songs (dedicating "Pure Unevil" to Kevin Garnett) and the subterranean bearded-dude crowd didn't know what to think. Awesome.

call all destroyer, Friday, 15 February 2008 20:04 (eighteen years ago)

Man, Drowned is the only one of their albums that I like. The first one wasn't nearly the monster that everyone seemed to think it was (in hype versus reality, it reminded me of Hot Hot Heat), and the next couple seemed really boring in comparison.

I've heard they're fantastic live, though.

Oh, and I was listening to Whirlwind Heat the other night and thinking that they seemed to have a fair amount in common with the Liars.

They are also of course on tour slaying the country right now.

I'm seeing 'em tomorrow in Austin -- my uh, fourth time? I think.
