Musically, it's Ron, who did most of the music for them. Dirk (Eric Idel) was always among my favourites in Monty Pyton, but wasn't quite as funny in The Rutles.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

Idle even

Geir Hongro, Monday, 28 January 2008 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

Stig all the way.

Lolpez, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Barry because "BARRY IS GEAR"

snoball, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'm going to vote for Stig because he married a lady who got a song written about her by Martin from Felt.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

Punk Floyd

Alex in NYC, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

I'll go with the guitarist of no fixed hairstyle.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 28 January 2008 22:58 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 31 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I think I gotta vote for Leppo, for his whole crazy history of learning how to play the vibes with little pieces of paper before he had actually vibes, then switching to guitar and then becoming one of the fastest men alive on that instrument. Also for his McCartneyesque vocals on "Between Us," among others.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Thursday, 31 January 2008 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

Barrington Womble!

Mark G, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:41 (eighteen years ago)

one month passes...

So what's this rutlemania, rutles reunion stuff about?

James Redd and the Blecchs, Monday, 17 March 2008 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

LATEST: ERIC IDLE's THE RUTLES 30th anniversary revue is set for a limited run in New York, coinciding with former Monty Python star's 65th birthday. Idle devised the Rutlemania show to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the spoof Beatles band's All You Need Is Cash mockumentary, which first aired in 1978. A one-week season of tribute concerts, featuring Beatles covers act The Fab Four as The Rutles, interacting with clips from the original film and dancing girls is currently playing in Hollywood. And Rutlemania will continue at the Blender Theater in the Big Apple from 24 March (08) and run until 29 March - Idle's 65th birthday. The anniversary celebrations in Los Angeles also include the first time the original Rutles - Dirk MCQuickly, Barry Wom, Stig O'Hara and Ron Nasty - have appeared in public together; the quartet made no personal appearances at the time of the film's 1978 premiere. Rock stars like Dave Stewart, Jeff Lynne and The Police's Andy Summers are expected to be among the fans in attendance to see a special screening of the 1978 All You Need Is Cash film, followed by a question-and-answer session with the four Rutles, Ron Nasty, Dirk MCQuickly, Stig O'Hara and Barry Wom (aka Idle, Neil Innes, John Halsey and Ricky Fataar). Reunion organiser Martin Lewis says, "This will be a magical evening where real rock stars show up to salute a reunion of mock rock stars."

So, I guess Neil and Eric have kissed/made up then.

Watching the Rutles film with Eric's commentry is classic.

For the first hour, he praises everyone and never even alludes to Neil Innes at all. And then suddenly, just when you think he's really got it in for him, he's praising Neils songs and performance generously.

Also, mentions he's got loads of off-cuts and is thinking about doing a sequel, at which point you really feel like turning to him and saying "is that really a good idea, Eric?"

But he did, and it was bad, apparently. Although I would like one, if I saw one cheap some place.

Mark G, Monday, 17 March 2008 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, I just read the IMDB review. Make that "if I see one for £1 in SuRidr"

Mark G, Monday, 17 March 2008 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

RIP, Ollie Halsall.

Actually, I just read the IMDB review. Make that "if I see one for £1 in SuRidr"

even then, don't. its awful.

stevie, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

Amongst the extras, one interesting full length interview with Mick Jagger, who (as Eric Idle says in his commentary) tells wayy more about his real feelings about the Beatles and some of the 'tales' by dint of covering it up via the 'rutles' device.

Whereas Paul Simon gives the dullest interview ever, and keeps forgetting to say Rutles, e.g. "and Paul made me a cup of tea himself... ay? Oh yeah, Dirk... um, and I went to the Candlestick park gig.. ay? oh.. right.."

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

"Keith was the one that liked them. He went for that La-de-da stuff." Or Something like that.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

Or can somebody tell me which episodes are particularly good and which can be safely skipped?

nico anemic cinema icon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 January 2010 11:35 (sixteen years ago)

Episodes? It's not that long!

Mark G, Monday, 4 January 2010 12:07 (sixteen years ago)

You'll cry! You'll laugh! You'll go "Hang on, is that Catherine Zeta Jones?" during the rooftop gig.

Mark G, Monday, 4 January 2010 12:08 (sixteen years ago)

Ha! Sorry, wrong thread. I was trying to start this thread Tony Palmer's "All You Need Is Love": Do I Really Want To Watch All 14 Hours Of It?

nico anemic cinema icon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 January 2010 12:09 (sixteen years ago)

Fair enough.

Mark G, Monday, 4 January 2010 12:17 (sixteen years ago)

You haven't by chance seen that other one have you?

nico anemic cinema icon (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 4 January 2010 13:20 (sixteen years ago)

I vaguely remember it from the original transmission.

I think it was on too late for a young'un.

You'll have to wait a bit

Yeah, I remember that one.

Funny, I dug the LP out for Sunday lunch listening for the kids, it went down pretty well.

I just found that "Can't Buy Me Lunch" (i.e. "Rutles 2") is on Youtube, so have grabbed it.

Wish me luck!

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 10:58 (thirteen years ago)

oh, mark, iirc it's dreadful...

Call Surgeon General C. Everett Koop. Poo-poo-pa-doop. (stevie), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 11:49 (thirteen years ago)

It's amazingly crap.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 3 July 2012 12:20 (thirteen years ago)

Never looked at that. The Rutles Archeology album is pretty good though. But of course they are by driven by different members of the Rutles comp.

ratso piazzolla (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 13:22 (thirteen years ago)

camp not comp

ratso piazzolla (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 3 July 2012 13:31 (thirteen years ago)

Right, I have now watched "Rutles 2: Can't buy me lunch"

Um, it's not terrible exactly. It's massively pointless for sure, apart from:

1) There's a lot of "original rutles" footage that they didn't use in the original film which would be good to see uninterrupted. Various concerts, Neil doing "Cheese and onions" on SatNightLive, etc.

2) There were not many 'talking heads' in the original, maybe they didn't get the names they wanted. But, Mick Jagger's presence was all it needed, and his interview is excellent (see above for comments). This time round, everyone said yes and everyone is here. Most are 'professional comedians from the US' and are mostly dull. A few actual musicians that are hit/miss. And two interviews that work: Billy Connolly and David Bowie.

3) Most of Eric Idle's jokes are repeats or variations from the original. The ones that aren't (e.g. triangular record) are rub.

4) Actually, the best bit is the final minute, the outtakes. Where none of the incidents are shown, only the guests cracking up. By now, you'll laugh at anything!

Basically, it's the same story again, which is mmmm.... all right. But, you know, pointless really.

If the DVD had good extras, it'd be worth a quid. But as far as putting this on the device for the kids to watch next time we're driving far, might just stick to Rutles 1.
