Sutekh

As search tells me there's no threads on Sutekh, a true favourite of mine if there ever was one, well, here it is.

With 2007 marking somewhat of an increase in his output (having put out some certified bangers), now is always a good time for appropriate lauding of him. Why did I make this today? Because earlier I re-listened to a recording of his Mutek set (initially being totally blown away by it seeing it live, and then the recording subsequently several months after) which gives warps my mind in all sorts of ways. (I can post it tommorow, once I have gotten sleep).
On-the-IDM-side-of-things-phobes need not shy away either; an admittedly not great way of describing it would be not unlike Michal Ho's recent output, in that it has that techno with a vague hip-hop-ish feel to it, with wacky sounds and fair deal of funk, but where I find Michal Ho to be a bit dry and boring, Sutekh just, ugh, gives it a 93 world series, bottom of the 9th Joe Carter homerun power treatment to things. For me, it is retrospectively the most interesting set of 2007, I'd say.

But, this thread is not just about an live set, it's about an arguably favourite producer of mine. Periods Make Sense still doesn't fail to make me feel all warm inside, and yeah, he's just, well, I really like him a lot.

Just because it's languishing in a directory on my server with no linkage, here's a live set of Sutekh's from spring 95 at a party at the Werepad in San Francisco. He hadn't played out in about 8 months and was trying some new stuff on the crowd. That was a great party all around, now I'm getting all wistful for living in the city and throwing parties.

Sutekh live at Transplant (25 MB)

The O.Lamm & Sutekh "Six Residua" is urgent and key.

Plus, major love for the manipulated jazz applause tracks on "Incest".

Oh, and he's releasing a split album with kit Clayton this year!

Ditto re "Six Residua", man I love that track. Incest Live still sounds good to me, such a powerful sense of momentum on that record.

compilation of his late 90's 12"s is overdue with everyone going on about minimal

stayed tuned also for Seth Horvitz solo release on Richard Chartier's label. All solo piano music (tho not played by humans), based on algorithims he made during MFA work at Mills in the past year. Beautiful stuff, kind of post-Satie, post-spectralist, and imo a very cool way to approach writing modern piano music

Dominique, Sunday, 3 October 2010 18:34 (fifteen years ago)

>post-Satie, post-spectralist

it's kind of a Nancarrow / Tenney / Palestine intersection

he spent a few weeks in Paris this year apprenticing himself to Palestine and learning how to play 'Strumming Music', there's a great mp3 of him playing it at Mills here: http://context.fm/blog/?p=441

and there's at least three or four CDs worth of music in the vein of 'Incest Live' he has sitting around that he's completely uninterested in putting out given his new interests so I guess we have to wait for the 20th anniversary deluxe editions for those
