This. That guy's been making hit songs in Finland since the 70s, most of them are humorous covers of international hits, like "Kung Fu Fighting" or "Moskau".

Didn't realise he was dead till just now. RIP. He did a ton of other lol britpop/indie -> Irish showband covers (Disco 2000, The Universal), but won't clutter the numbers with them.

Most of Bettye LaVette's I've Got My Own Hell To Raise to thread.

Sara Sara Sara, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to hear that H. Hancock album. Looking at the tracklist, I'd count four of those for the purposes of this thread:

39. "All Apologies" (Nirvana)
40. "Love Is Stronger Than Pride" (Sade)
41. "When Can I See You" (Babyface)
42. "Thieves in the Temple" (Prince)

The rest are all roughly in Herbie's own generation.

jaymc, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't heard it for years, but I remember being disappointed because I was expecting recognizable melodies, and Herbie re-harmonizes and post-bops them into oblivion. Basically I wanted a Bad Plus treatment before they existed.

Jordan, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe I'm wrong though, because I'm listening to clips on amazon and "All Apologies" has a straight reading of the melody + sitars, and "Thieves in the Temple" is pretty straight-forward smooth funk.

Jordan, Tuesday, 19 February 2008 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think I've heard his "All Apologies."

Earth, Wind, & Fire/Kenny G Cover

In 2005, Saxophonist Kenny G and Funk legends Earth, Wind, & Fire released a cover of the song "The Way You Move" with Philip Bailey and Maurice White on vocals. The song appears on Kenny G's At Last... The Duets Album and Earth, Wind, & Fire's 2005 album Illumination.

AHHHH, why would EW&F work with Kenny G. ;_;
