Ramones songs like.............

Hi, was wondering if anyone could help. I am looking for the Ramones, I don't know what you want to call them, maybe more mature songs. The sloppy proto punk ones never really did it for me(Rock & Roll high school, animal boy etc.) maybe if I had gotten in to them at an earlier age? I am looking for the ones, off any album, like Brain is hanging upside down and Howling at the moon, truly some of the best songs ever in my opinion. Do they have others like these? The ones with a bit more going on, maybe a bit more polish, than the 3 chord numbers. Please no one take offence at this, the simple songs are good just not quite my thing. Thanks very much.

Well, um you could

1) pick any of the albums that have those songs on them, or

2) get "weird tales of the ramones" 4 disc set, ignore disc 1 (!) (ahem..), and try out the stuff on discs 2 and 3 (disc 4 is a DVD, mostly latter stuff), pick tracks you like and get the albums that they are from.

Hey ho.

In other words, you're looking for the Ramones attempting to not be the Ramones. You'd probably enjoy "Poison Heart" and/or "I Want To Live."

But, really, if you can't enjoy their trademark fare, what's the point?

See also "Don't Come Close" and "Needles & Pins" (the latter of which they did not write). And also several tracks on Subterrainian Jungle like their cover of "Time Has Come Today".

I suppose "End of the Century" would be a safe bet.

"Something to Believe In" is a close cousin to "Bonzo Goes to Bitburg" and it's a good one.

The best late-era radio-gambit Ramones record is Too Tough To Die (1984). Totally glossy and weird, almost metal, but kind of awesome. Could have soundtracked any number of pulpy 80s horror movies put out by a major studio but filmed with no budget. "Howling At The Moon" is on that one. Totally awes.

whiney otm. if you like that get animal boy too, it's underrated, kinda glossy (jean beauvoir where are you now?), and has "something to believe in," "bonzo" (by its slightly redacted title) and "somebody put something in my drink," richie's great contribution to the band.

animal boy also has "crummy stuff." the chorus goes "crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy crummy stuff" (repeat).
