I've seen some discussion about the London 'Funky House' scene in some of the other dance threads and given that they just released 'Pure Funky House' ('Pure Garage' series) it must be about time we have a thread on it. It's pretty much all they play on Rinse FM at the moment too, plus the Grime people seem to have finally given up and started doing it (see Wearing My Rolex).

People have been talking about a new sound emerging from this scene a la Apple's 'Mr Bean', but does this compilation really show anything of the sort? What about that Rinse 03 mix, has anyone heard it?

These funky house compilations confuse me - so it's both "Church of Lady" AND "Sound of Freedom" AND "Walking Away" AND "Put Ya Hands Up For Detroit"? I mean I guess I can see how all these could be described as "funky house" but it seems like too open-door a music policy to give rise to a new, coherent sub-genre - the "Pure" in the title almost seems like a joke. It's like: there's this new genre sweeping London and the south of the UK. It's called... house!
That said I'd be interested to hear stuff like the Lonyo, Donae'o tracks etc. just to see what those guys are up to and how they fit in.

yeah i'm really confused now. i thought funky house was fish go deep and post-post-filter-house stuff. then i heard it was referred to this 4x4 revival stuff. are these two different definitions of funky house?? what does "body language" have to do with it all??

oh no we're calling it funky house? i thought it was urban house?!?

i'm into ~ 1/4 of this stuff in another context, but this just seems like the lamest repackaging ever

maybe 1/3rd

the UK prefix grates (as does the funky tbh but plus ca change me vs genre names)

Scott this is the thread you want really, it's full of awesome mixes but the DJ Larizzle and DJ Onedrop ones are pretty essential as guides to the more riotous end of the genre.
The second CD of that Crazy Cousinz compilation is pretty much the ideal introduction to the genre in general though.

yeah, when people started going on about "funky" i thought they were talking about the Burton-pop shit that pastel shirted office boys with too much hair gel take coke to in Bar Absolute.

"Scott this is the thread you want really"
ah right i knew there was another one. i figure i like house music, bongos, and, um, stuff that is funky, so this might be my kinda stuff.

It's fun to compare the tracklist scott posted to the one I posted at the start of the thread - amazing how this scene evolved (or that first CD was just really badly put together ?!? I can't remember anymore!)
