sick late '70s synthesizer heavy jazz w/latin rhythms, w/help from john scofield and randy brecker (among others). i've always had this album on my radar and never actually bought it until tonight for 2 bucks on LP. as far as i know it's never been mentioned on ilm. highly recommended.

Title track is an absolute monster. It's a total anomaly in Cobham's canon; he appeared to have fallen under the spell of late-period Heldon for 11 minutes.

He's a guy I'm kind of surprised doesn't get more drum geek love -- not that he gets none, but his skill level is so incredible that I'd think he'd be on more top 10 lists. I like him a lot with Mahavishnu but haven't spent much time with his solo discog beyond Spectrum.

Stratus is a beast, would have preferred it to be 10 minutes longer.

I'm a drummer and Cobham is on my top 10 for sure. When I was a teenager looking for the most crazy chopsy stuff I could find, I got his Mahavishnu records for cheap and he immediately became my idol. I still can't play "Vital Transformation," though.
I have four of his solo albums. I like that they're not just stupid chops exercises like the drum nerd in me was hoping for; they're actually less over-the-top than the Mahavishnu records.

Love Cobham's '70s solo albums. Just wrote a big piece about Crosswinds that'll be up on Burning Ambulance on Tuesday. Shabazz, a live album of mostly new music, is great, too.

Torn between bumping this thread or Cutest bassists?
Immortal bassline, I'm not a bass player but it kinda trips me how he alternates which finger hits the lowest note each time
