Surprised to find no mention of this comp on ILM. (Dunno, maybe search just sucks.) Anyway, though it came out a couple years ago, I'm new to it, and liking it a lot. Collection of french electronic new-wave, pop and even punk music from the late 70s thru mid-80s. Not mind-blowing for the most part, but really damn good. Familiar elements put together in unfamiliar ways. Especially liking the "technopop w/ a punk edge" stuff. Similar to contemporary synth-punk garage bands, though nowhere near as harsh as, say, Screamers.

Search:
A Trois Dans les WC - "Contagion"
Act - "Ping Pong"
Comix - "Touche Pas Mon Sexe"
TGV - "Partie 1"
Marie Moore - "Pretty Day"

Anybody got any pointers, re: other worthwhile (surprising) stuff in the same vein, especially if it's even more punk and/or minimal?

Yeah, enjoyable comp, I reviewed it on the AMG somewhere. I assume Dan Selzer would be the go-to guy for more.

Cool, thanks for the heads up! I'll see if I can track down a copy. Odd that there's so little (NO) artist crossover. Hmmm... Also looks like there's a third semi-related volume - Des Jeunes Gens Modernes: Post Punk, Cold Wave, et Culture Novo en France.

Guess the one I have is supposed to be more dance-oriented, while the other two are minimal syth stuff and post-punk/coldwave, respectively.

Seek thee out "The Lost Tapes" and "The Found Tapes" LPs on Minimal Wave Records. The first comp is European stuff and the second is American.

Awesome. Even seems to be vinyls floating arounds. This is exactly what I need: a whole new universe of weird shit to waste my (non) retirement (non) savings on.

There's also this one. Never saw it in stores, only here. And obviously, So Young But So Cold, but that's better known, and more available.

contenderizer, if you can't find those LPs around you locally, fusetronsound.com ought to have copies.

This is a timely thread, seeing as I just ordered this comp off Amazon.

There's another one on very similar lines called So Young But So Cold, but that one is a) more expensive and b) not as good.

Also I think if you Google Search BIPPP on ILX you should find something, cos here is where I found out about it in the first place :)

If you like edgy, raw French post-punk, you should try this band called "Bérurier noir", I found about it from my gf. They were an eighties anarchist/leftist band with a raw but kinda cool sound; for example they didn't have a proper drummer, so their songs have a lot of weird, aggressive drum machine loops.

That sounds cool, I'll look out for them.
