I purposely didn't choose anything more folk than rock.

:( bump

Hard to know how to respond, Lorax. I like some Grifters and RRM stuff (earlier recordings = better in both cases), but the rest of what you mention doesn't appeal.

Rock = get drunk and damage things
Folk = get drunk and sing old-timey music
Experimental = get drunk and annoy/puzzle/terrify the neighbors/cats

Re contenderizer's defintion's, I'd say Freakwater's Thinking of You, and probably any recent live shots you might find on the Web, ditto live stuff linked from andrewbird.net (live does better by a number of his songs than studion). I like Robert Forster's new The Evangelist too, and some (maybe an EP's-worth) of the Silver Jews' Lookout Mountain Lookout Sea (out in June). Somewhat more toward yer favored, gnarlier Chicago approach, at least some of the time (although he lives in North Carolina): David Karsten Daniels' Fear of Flying (check him on our host, paperthinwalls.com, and you can prob find some other stuff you'd like there).

Also, and really more than DKD or most of what I just mentioned, given what you list, you might like the Chicago chamber-folk-art-rock whatever of that Janet Bean And (The?)Concertina Wire album on Thrill Jockey.

I guess if my categorization of the albums/bands that I mentioned fails to uphold the genre I tried to classify them as (and believe me classifying is damn hard nowadays), maybe you can suggest albums that seem similar to the ones I mentioned.

no one else knows similar music (last bump)? Robert Forster, David Karsten Daniels, Silver Jews didn't really compare well in my book. Seriously though, thanks for replying.
