me too. like "jesus fever" isn't even one of my top three on the album but it runs thru my head

I loved Childhood Prodigy. Reading this thread and a few reviews, I'm guessing the new one is closer to Square Shells than CP. I'm alright with that but prefer his more freewheeling style.

bummer. i have tickets for friday night's show. hope he gets his stuff back together soon

reggie (qualmsley), Saturday, 19 March 2011 16:57 (thirteen years ago) link

does a Ned Raggett like Kurt Vile, or does he just follow random people's Twitters?

Vile doesn't seem like "Ned music" imo

More of an RT in this case.

ah got it

suddenly it all makes sense & my life has been restored to balance & normalcy

"Smoke Ring..." is a damn near perfect record, marred only by the out of place "puppet to the man." Three three plus minute outro on "Ghost Town" is a sheer wonder, esp. when that insect like guitar bubbles up in the mix.

No one does stoner observations like Vile.

kwhitehead, Tuesday, 22 March 2011 15:26 (thirteen years ago) link

"puppet" is great, fuiud

Yeah, Puppet was the first track I got into on this.

This is obviously my problem, but I already have a tough enough time with "Kurt Vile," but "Smoke Ring For My Halo" on top of it has made it such that I cannot even bring myself to listen to his music.

pretty stupid reason not to listen to an album...

skip, Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:16 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, considering how terrible the names of so many things in my collection are... I'll give him a shot... "Ghost Town" is as good a place to start as any?

Clarke B., Tuesday, 14 June 2011 23:42 (twelve years ago) link

just listen to the whole album!

I find myself explaining that rather frequently.

this album is great, and his stuff translates really well to a live setting (from what i can tell)

hard to believe

he's really good live. the quieter solo stuff especially. really intense.

the guitar playing is so distinctive

listened to this on my way to work today

dmr, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

such a beautiful/great album.

but god the live show was lifeless

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

I gave this a listen a few weeks back and liked it a lot... Thanks for the push!

Clarke B., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

I had never heard that "Blackbery Song" posted above. Really beautiful (though I hate vocals in one headphone; always bums me out).

"Smoke Ring" is my favorite album of the year so far by a long shot. The only other thing I have of his is the "Hunchback" EP... I clearly need to pick some more of it up.

She Got the Shakes, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

Promo copy of the new War On Drugs record is sounding nice--lining up even more neatly than expected with KV's sound on "Smoke Ring" (not a bad thing in and of itself, and no big surprise since these Philly fellows like Granduciel and Vile all seem to have bro'ed down long enough working on this particular hermetic style for a while now).

For example, one new War On Drugs song's riff is just like "On Tour", but in an upbeat shuffle...

New EP coming and deluxe version of Smoke Ring for my Halo

http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/2011/09/06/kurt-vile-so-outta-reach-ep-and-deluxe-edition-of-album-november-8-the-creature-mp3-now/

New song is good, definetly reminds me of an older piece of his that I can't quite put my finger on.

Secretly hoping he goes back to the krauty/psychedelic/experimental stuff still :x

Ryan, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

I feel like the War on Drugs kinda takes care of my kraut/psych KV needs, whether he's in that band or not. Was he really ever that krauty to begin with?

Anyone else out there fucking livid that they're slapping a bonus disc onto this album? Like, why do I bother spending actual money on albums the week they come out if 6 months later there's gonna be extra songs on it for the same price. First world problems, I know.

International Waters, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

but isn't the bonus disk just the new ep?

low content wine racing (stevie), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

the new ep isn't coming out alone on cd. and even if it was, it wouldn't be free to people that already bought the album and basically got it to the point where someone thought a "deluxe edition" was worth doing.

International Waters, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 23:58 (twelve years ago) link

two weeks pass...

^^^ otm, I'm really annoyed by this too. Yes, I understand I can get the EP tracks digitally, but its still kind of a slap in the face when labels do this.

KV LPs as WA films

The Great:
Constant Hitmaker/Bottle Rocket
God Is Saying This To You/Rushmore
Smoke Ring For My Halo/The Royal Tenenbaums

The Very Good:
The Hunchback EP/The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Square Shells EP/The Darjeeling Limited

The Failure:
Childish Prodigy/ The Life Aquatic

Prodigy=Failure?!

crazy talk!

nostormo, Saturday, 24 September 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, "overnite religion" and "Unknown" alone makes it at least Very Good - those might be two fav KV songs. i like others on it as well.

Blackberry Song is awesome too. I also love the production on the album, or rather the lack of production.

he sounds like mick jagger or iggy pop in this record and he never did before or after.
like royal trux meets spacemen 3 or something

I think CP is a major misstep. Maybe if it was your first taste you'd think it was good, but not me. The EP version of "Hunchback" is so much better and I find "Freak Train" extremely annoying. I actually gave up on him after that, but SRfMH is so good I had to come back.
