this album is great, and his stuff translates really well to a live setting (from what i can tell)

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 15 June 2011 03:12 (twelve years ago) link

it's his real name!

hard to believe

he's really good live. the quieter solo stuff especially. really intense.

I've listened to Smoke Ring more than any other new album this year, for sure.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 05:49 (twelve years ago) link

the guitar playing is so distinctive

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 05:51 (twelve years ago) link

listened to this on my way to work today

dmr, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:29 (twelve years ago) link

such a beautiful/great album.

but god the live show was lifeless

sean gramophone, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

I gave this a listen a few weeks back and liked it a lot... Thanks for the push!

Clarke B., Tuesday, 26 July 2011 16:33 (twelve years ago) link

I had never heard that "Blackbery Song" posted above. Really beautiful (though I hate vocals in one headphone; always bums me out).

"Smoke Ring" is my favorite album of the year so far by a long shot. The only other thing I have of his is the "Hunchback" EP... I clearly need to pick some more of it up.

She Got the Shakes, Tuesday, 26 July 2011 18:34 (twelve years ago) link

Promo copy of the new War On Drugs record is sounding nice--lining up even more neatly than expected with KV's sound on "Smoke Ring" (not a bad thing in and of itself, and no big surprise since these Philly fellows like Granduciel and Vile all seem to have bro'ed down long enough working on this particular hermetic style for a while now).

For example, one new War On Drugs song's riff is just like "On Tour", but in an upbeat shuffle...

smoke ring is great, got a sweet melancholic vibe to it

"In My Time"

Trip Maker, Wednesday, 27 July 2011 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

album production is really well done too. nice electron bubbling underneath that never overwhelms.

New EP coming and deluxe version of Smoke Ring for my Halo

http://www.matadorrecords.com/matablog/2011/09/06/kurt-vile-so-outta-reach-ep-and-deluxe-edition-of-album-november-8-the-creature-mp3-now/

New song is good, definetly reminds me of an older piece of his that I can't quite put my finger on.

Secretly hoping he goes back to the krauty/psychedelic/experimental stuff still :x

Ryan, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 21:15 (twelve years ago) link

I feel like the War on Drugs kinda takes care of my kraut/psych KV needs, whether he's in that band or not. Was he really ever that krauty to begin with?

Anyone else out there fucking livid that they're slapping a bonus disc onto this album? Like, why do I bother spending actual money on albums the week they come out if 6 months later there's gonna be extra songs on it for the same price. First world problems, I know.

International Waters, Tuesday, 6 September 2011 22:06 (twelve years ago) link

but isn't the bonus disk just the new ep?

low content wine racing (stevie), Tuesday, 6 September 2011 22:08 (twelve years ago) link

the new ep isn't coming out alone on cd. and even if it was, it wouldn't be free to people that already bought the album and basically got it to the point where someone thought a "deluxe edition" was worth doing.

^^^ otm, I'm really annoyed by this too. Yes, I understand I can get the EP tracks digitally, but its still kind of a slap in the face when labels do this.

KV LPs as WA films

The Great:
Constant Hitmaker/Bottle Rocket
God Is Saying This To You/Rushmore
Smoke Ring For My Halo/The Royal Tenenbaums

The Very Good:
The Hunchback EP/The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Square Shells EP/The Darjeeling Limited

The Failure:
Childish Prodigy/ The Life Aquatic

chromecassettes, Saturday, 24 September 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

Prodigy=Failure?!

crazy talk!

nostormo, Saturday, 24 September 2011 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, "overnite religion" and "Unknown" alone makes it at least Very Good - those might be two fav KV songs. i like others on it as well.

Blackberry Song is awesome too. I also love the production on the album, or rather the lack of production.

he sounds like mick jagger or iggy pop in this record and he never did before or after.
like royal trux meets spacemen 3 or something

I think CP is a major misstep. Maybe if it was your first taste you'd think it was good, but not me. The EP version of "Hunchback" is so much better and I find "Freak Train" extremely annoying. I actually gave up on him after that, but SRfMH is so good I had to come back.

chromecassettes, Monday, 26 September 2011 22:12 (twelve years ago) link

guys the new split 7" with woods is REALLY GOOD too

69, Monday, 26 September 2011 22:14 (twelve years ago) link

@69, does that 7" come with a download code? Might pick up from label.

I'm curious when some of the new stuff he played at his acoustic instores will turn up recorded, he did a great sounding murder ballad that I've yet to hear again.

Ryan, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

hmmm im not sure it does! lemme look later on this evening...

69, Tuesday, 27 September 2011 20:18 (twelve years ago) link

Heard it at a friends house last night. Not too much material, but it's got me thirsty for that new EP.

Was listening to some older stuff and I'm starting to think Space Forklift is his best song.

Ryan, Wednesday, 28 September 2011 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

Space Forklift is amazing

Kurt Vile and The Young will be such a killer show to catch. Kind of bummed that new 7" is only available at two shows.

Seriously, fuck off Matador. Looks like I have to re-buy Smoke Ring For My Halo in order to get the new EP. The only way its available on its own is vinyl, with either CD or digital you have to buy the Smoke Ring deluxe edition to get both the album and the EP. Hate when labels pull this bullshit, I expect it from major labels, but Matador? C'mon guys.

get a record player

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 November 2011 14:36 (twelve years ago) link

Have one, but its in storage for now because I had to sacrifice the space for our nursery. Its just frustrating. And you wonder why people turn to illegal downloading when you won't give willing customers an option to pay for your product.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 7 November 2011 14:38 (twelve years ago) link

yeah whenever i am frustrated with a company, i just steal from them, it makes me feel so much better.

Mr. Que, Monday, 7 November 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

I didn't say that, c'mon now.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 7 November 2011 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

can you not get the EP from iTunes?

$6? Seriously, fuck off Amazon.

PTSD clarinet kid (am0n), Monday, 7 November 2011 16:35 (twelve years ago) link

$6 is reasonable for an EP! I am feeling happier now. I didn't see it on iTunes as a standalone and digital wasn't an option at Matador's store. Didn't even think to check Amazon.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Monday, 7 November 2011 17:50 (twelve years ago) link

yeah amazon mp3 is great now IMO, usually cheaper and also no DRM and 320k quality, i love it, i haven't bought anything off itunes in forever

the free cloud player works well too

the title track has a v tom petty vibe imho

The doctor smiled, realizing that he had made his point. (stevie), Monday, 7 November 2011 18:59 (twelve years ago) link

i don't know about tom petty but the intricate guitar sound of the first song is even more magic than anything on smoke rings. it's like a naturally dyed persian carpet woven from guitar strings.

alex in mainhattan, Monday, 7 November 2011 21:02 (twelve years ago) link

I just bought the songs individually from iTunes (in this case, cheaper than Amazon).
It's really great.
