I will play Thelonious In Action as loud as I can in tribute.

Total bummer. Introducing Johnny Griffin was one of the albums that got me interested in jazz. Love the tone he got from the instrument.

Wow, thought he must already be etc. Love him on Misterioso ("I got it!"). His own A Blowin' Session is great too.

Shit.
Blowin Session is classic.
Will play Misterioso tonight. And to think I almost sold it this week.

Johnny Griffin was awesome on Wes Montgomery's Full House.

totally underrated dude. I'm jamming Live in Tokyo from '78 and this guy could play, play, and play. The "tough tenors" records he did with Eddie Davis have such an easy feel to them that you lose yourself to the command of tone and feel that he and Davis share. He had a long life and recorded a fair amount, so there's plenty out there to continually discover.

this one is so good! He also pops up on the Wes Montgomery live In Paris from Resonance Records this year as well, quality musician!

oh yeah, Lookin' at Monk is great. His long association with Orrin Keepnews resulted in a lot of great stuff- the records he did on Galaxy in the late 70s were total jammers too.

I got a four-CD box the other year, which now appears to be out of print, that had all of the Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis/Johnny Griffin Quintet recordings with Junior Mance on piano, Larry Gales on bass, and Ben Riley on drums (this was before Gales and Riley joined Monk's band). It includes the albums Tough Tenors, Griff and Lock, Lookin' At Monk and Blues Up and Down (which has Lloyd Mayers on piano), and four live albums all recorded in a single night at Minton's Playhouse.
I think the same music is now available as two 2CD sets - one with all the studio stuff, and one with all the live stuff. Either way, it's amazing music and well worth hearing.

I love the Johnny Griffin stuff I have, but it's not very much. My favorite thing is this compilation album of European recordings. Sahib Shihab shows up on a few cuts and he's quite possibly the single most underrated player ever, so it's a really killer album. Pretty much anything on the Rearward label is good, but that album is one of their best.
