Teenage me would've gone with "Ask" or "Panic". Lately, I've been into "This Night Has Opened My Eyes".

"Please, Please, Please...", while a great song, is too short for serious consideration. Needs two more minutes.

I as bored with this poll before I began (to vote).

I was always bummed that this compilation didn't have "How Soon Is Now?" Woulda been a near perfect compilation with it added.

See, there were (indeed still are) situations where I leave the south, travel north, and get confused and so on, and back again.

OK, not really.

An American compilation but a fairly regular fixture of UK HMV sales, so my first Smiths purchase and probably still the one that gets played most. Love all of the first half (my attention wanders a bit from "Golden Lights" on) but will probably vote for "Ask".

Went with "Stretch Out and Wait" -- yeah, the chastity song. Hrm.

Stretch Out and Wait, my favorite Smiths song of all. I was beside myself when Mozzer whipped it out in concert last year.

The best Smiths "album" or whatever IMO. A tough choice. Gonna go with "Sweet and Tender Hooligan".

easily my favourite smiths album, too. 'this night has opened my eyes' has been stuck in my head all week and i haven't listened to it for years, so i'm voting for that.

The first Smiths CD I bought and among the first half-dozen CDs by anybody I bought. Even skimming off the lower tier of all-time favorite Smiths tracks this is still impossible for me:

By deluding myself with mental jujitsu I can get that down to "William" vs "Sheila" but it's a false and unbearable choice.

There was a skip on "Ask", so I got a 20 minute rendition of "AskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskmeAskme..."

I didn't notice that Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now was on this. I became mesmerised briefly by the music on it, listening to it over and over trying to tune out Morrissey's flat vocals - it's comically sunny. There's a thread somewhere proposing Blondie as the most eclectic band, but on backing tracks alone The Smiths must have a good shout

so right! got my vote too. this is the second CD i ever bought, in 1989, and even though the cd itself is now a slightly funny colour, it still plays fine after 457365476873 listens.

i do agree it's the best Smiths CD.

PPPLMGWIW gets my song vote

What amazes me is that, 17 years after buying this on tape, a new song surprises me with a zinger I never heard, or a guitar curlicue I missed, or a rhythm more beatwise than expected. The surprise this year is "Rubber Ring," which rarely gets much love: note the cello underpinning every other verse. "Oscillate Wildly" is one of my favorite instrumentals, "Ask" is Moz oscillating wildly, with an ear to ear grin, And I wish more snark was as wise as "You Haven't Earned It Yet, Baby."

The Queen is Dead is mighty fine, but LTB is maybe all the Smiths you need own.

I just bought my first CD copy, but I will not toss the tape I've owned since September '91.
