These days I'm preferring Love and Dancing. But I'm going with "The Things That Dreams Are Made Of" here. It's like the cover of New Order's Republic if it could sing.

We didn't poll this already?

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 11 September 2008 08:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Which newspaper's giving it away?

Billy Dods, Thursday, 11 September 2008 08:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Not that I need another copy.

Billy Dods, Thursday, 11 September 2008 08:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Not the first time we're polling this, mind you.

My pick is still "Do Or Die".

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 11 September 2008 09:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I was

- testing out the 'thread already exists' function (ahem)..
- or 2. Telling you UK folk that you can get a free one

Mark G, Thursday, 11 September 2008 09:29 (fifteen years ago) link

OK. I guess this poll exists for all the UK users that had yet to hear this album before it was given away for free. Now they can vote too. :)

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 11 September 2008 09:30 (fifteen years ago) link

"The Sound Of The Crowd", because of the abstract lyrics

snoball, Thursday, 11 September 2008 09:33 (fifteen years ago) link

This is an ongoing series, so far missed / previous be: "True" SpandauBallet, and "No Parlez" Paul Young.

Yesterday was "Prince Charming" Adam and the Ants, the kids were pleased...

Forthcoming be "Searching for the young soul rebels" Dexys, and some other albums on the "not being accepted by Music and Video Exchange for any kind of trade-in value" list...

Mark G, Thursday, 11 September 2008 09:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Hold on, what paper is this with?

Tom D., Thursday, 11 September 2008 09:40 (fifteen years ago) link

the cunting mail, isn't it?

"seconds", anyway. but really: could be any of them.

large hardon collider (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 11 September 2008 09:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Socialist Oakey should be ashamed.

Hands up anyone else who thought this was going to be a Demon Days poll.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 10:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I'm nipping out to buy the Mail, I'll ask the shop assistant to slip it inside a copy of Big Jugs in case anyone from my office sees me

Wrinkled Aeneas (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 September 2008 10:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Why run the risk? Get a copy for 50p out of the charity shop and absolve yourself of the guilt!

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 10:56 (fifteen years ago) link

If the Mail really wanted to provide a public service they should have attached a free CD of the Patrick Cargill album.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 10:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Socialist Oakey should be ashamed

i wonder how much control he has over this kind of thing?

large hardon collider (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 11 September 2008 10:57 (fifteen years ago) link

None, probably...it's Virgin who have the say so, I guess, but he could always forego royalties out of solidarity etc.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 10:59 (fifteen years ago) link

hmm... tum ti tum, don't mind me...

How many of these people would Daily Mail readers actually let into their homes?

snoball, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Even in this degraded company Once Upon A Time is singularly awful. The video for "All The Things She Said" is still the worst video ever.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:07 (fifteen years ago) link

Perhaps it's the knowledge that Jim Kerr's vocals and mannerisms are primarily responsible for Bono being such a twunt?

snoball, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:10 (fifteen years ago) link

Even more of a twunt surely?

Wrinkled Aeneas (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Wasn't it the other way around (xp) - the mythical long walk on the beach that Kerr took with Bono in 1983 following which he decided to turn the Minds into U3?

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually I think it's the other way round, Bono's influence ruined Simple Minds

Wrinkled Aeneas (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:12 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost!

Wrinkled Aeneas (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:12 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh I so remember it (xpost that video)! No need to look.

Bad case of "let's get a soul singer in, we'll look like we're funky!"

I never 'liked' Simple minds, as I didn't really know their early stuff, so don't feel that sense of loss that the people who *did* like them, then watched them turn to shite.

I have sympathy for them, I really do.

Mark G, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:13 (fifteen years ago) link

(xxxxxpost to myself) I mean on stage/on record. Bono being a twunt anywhere else is entirely his own fault.

snoball, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:13 (fifteen years ago) link

joint Kerr/Bono interview from 1983...

snoball, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I loved and still love everything the Minds did up to and including New Gold Dream. But I remember the horrible sinking feeling in my stomach when Peter Powell premiered "Waterfront" on R1 and we just knew they'd sold out. It felt like a total corporate smack in the face.

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I think Kerr started it, Bono just took it further. "It", btw, being a self important prick.

snoball, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:18 (fifteen years ago) link

No no, mullet and flag at Red Rocks was a year ahead of "Waterfront."

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Bono is definitely the guilty man

Wrinkled Aeneas (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:23 (fifteen years ago) link

Jimbo just wanted to be the Peter Gabriel of Toryglen up till then

Wrinkled Aeneas (Tom D.), Thursday, 11 September 2008 11:26 (fifteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Monday, 15 September 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Ridiculously small turnout for this poll. Great album, too.

ilxor, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 01:58 (fifteen years ago) link

The small turnout is probably because we've done "Dare" before.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 09:20 (fifteen years ago) link

Also ILX being down
