What's the connection here?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 15:56 (seventeen years ago)

I mean MES, Beefheart and Brown I can kind of see, but Suzuki and Pop are basically singers and Perry is something else altogether.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 15:59 (seventeen years ago)

referring to MES vs. Black Francis poll...Black Francis is great but out of his league, so I was pitting MES with people "in his league" I guess...kind of...no connection really...

Iggy Pop, because of "The Idiot". The rest are/were all generally insufferably annoying.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 16:10 (seventeen years ago)

Alright in order:

1) Lee Perry Productions (Marley, Congos, Romeo, Murvin, Byles, Heptones, Dr. Alimantado, et all)--just way way too much greatness here. It's not all him, but he's got his name on the master tapes.
2) James Brown
3) The Fall
4 tie) The Stooges/Damo Suzuki's Can releases
6) Captain Beefheart
7) Lee Perry stuff where he's actually singing/scatting/rapping or doing whatever he does on them (i.e. Time Boom X, Roast Fish, Secret Lab)
8) Iggy Pop stuff released under his own name

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 17:27 (seventeen years ago)

Nate Dogg

that's a list I can agree with except
a) The Fall & James Brown switch places (sry but it's true_
b) Can should be tied with the Captain.
c) some of Lee Perry's singing stuff (People Funny Boy, Finger Mash) isn't all that bad, esp. when he's with the Upsetters (their instrumental/dub tracks are a noticable ommission in your list--though you are right, there's a LOT of stuff out there)

I voted for Lee Perry because I really don't like Mark E Smith or Iggy Pop or Damo Suzuki too much. Even though I probably have enjoyed more Captain Beefheart music than Lee Perry music, I think if I dug into Lee Perry I'd find more to like. Also, as much as I like some Captain Beefheart, I can't listen to him most of the time, whereas even the Lee Perry stuff I just kindof like okay is easy enough to have on. And I didn't see James Brown until after I'd voted, but I still might have voted from Lee Perry since I don't like James Brown nearly as much as is normal around here (or around lots of places).

"(their instrumental/dub tracks are a noticable ommission in your list--though you are right, there's a LOT of stuff out there)"

I count these as Perry productions. Perry singing (either over his own tracks or more likely over other folk's stuff is it's own thing.)

Mark E Smith by a mile.

Love all the others to a greater/lesser degree though.

Lee Perry, on general principles, 'cuz while I spent most of my adult life avoiding ska, reggae & dub, it turns out some of it is not entirely terrible.

OK, another vote for MES, but Iggy comes a close second with the Captain third. Although if the question were "who would win an on stage fight out the following?" then it would still be MES first, but Iggy would be last.

snoball, Thursday, 18 December 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)

Iggy. Just because. Also, I have more of his records. I tried to sell the one Lee Perry LP I have, but the French postal service sent it back. Still don't like it, maybe they'd have kept a Stooges bootleg.

Where's Louis Armstrong?

What on earth is Damo Suzuki doing in this poll?

Lee Perry

"Although if the question were "who would win an on stage fight out the following?" then it would still be MES first, but Iggy would be last."

This is a stupid argument, but Perry was a bad ass back in his day. Pretty sure he could take the rest of these guys no problem. Don't know about Beefheart or Smith, but most of these guys are pretty short.

Alex in SF, Friday, 19 December 2008 15:20 (seventeen years ago)

But Perry is the shortest of the lot! I bet James Brown could handle himself in a fight.

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Friday, 19 December 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah a fight with his wife.

Alex in SF, Friday, 19 December 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

Him and MES both

Vicious Cop Kills Gentle Fool (Tom D.), Friday, 19 December 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

Smith couldn't fight his way out of a paper bag. Still, I voted for him.
