Generally this will tend to contain your favourite tracks, but it's all about the sequencing, the use of non-obvious songs in crucial positions, the 80-minute limit, the creation of a whole new album.
My year-end '07 mix-CD was completely awesome, and I still listen to it regularly. It'll be interesting to see whether '08 holds up so well. I've had to make some interesting decisions, especially with regards track four...
1. Half Man Half Biscuit - National Shite Day (06.25)2. Silvery - Revolving Sleepy Signs (04.10)3. Virgin Passages - This Is Not The End Of The World Again (06.49)4. Esoteric - Circle (20.45)5. Los Campesinos - Heart Swells/Pacific Daylight Time (02.37)6. Elbow - The Loneliness Of A Tower Crane Driver (05.14)7. Thomas White - The Silence Stops Tonight (04.32)8. Late Of The Pier - The Enemy Are The Future (06.01)9. The Chap - Proper Rock (03.55)10. Torche - Amnesian (06.26)11. Youthmovies - Surtsey (05.36)12. Volcano! - Palimpsests (07.18)
yes there is a 20-minute song early on in the mix, yes it is a deliberate "lives or dies by this" move

ok I have just made a change to this, Elbow wasn't working at all, so it is directly replaced (same position) by:

Whiney's mix is not bad at all, I like the looks of it.
I'll come up with my own shortly.
― ilxor, Friday, 26 December 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)
I was aiming for a personal "moods of 2008" feel for the mix, as opposed to simply selecting my favourite tracks. The running time is 80:04, but the last track ends with about 30 seconds of silence, so AFAIC I'm under the time limit.

I'm stalling on the LC-HS midsection (too popular/too mainstream/not really adding anything much), but I haven't quite found a suitable 7-minute replacement(s). The trouble is, I really want the rest to stay. I COULD drop those two and Virgin Passages for the 14-minute ultra-noise-jam "Toilet Door Tits" by Shit And Shine (which I really would like to include) but that's really unfairly weighting it on two monsters, and the way it bleeds from Silvery -> Virgin Passages -> Circle is essential IMO. Plus, VP is probably the most obscure, arguably out-there thing here. Oh, conundrums.
IKR, I totally bat for that Chap album, it's awesome. Get sick of pretty quick = Of Montreal. The Chap has genuine staying-power.

The LC stays, I have decided. It works nicely, especially after the Esoteric monster. It's that damned 5-minute #6 position I can't sort. Even Mogwai are jostling for inclusion, which definitely shouldn't happen.

If I get annoyed by presence of Mogwai I shall remove it and make no further alterations, sticking with a 72-minute CD-80. The seguing works both ways. I do very much like the Mogwai song, though, so for now it's a keeper.
