now HERE's a list.

Zooropa has worn rather better than In Utero, and I like janet a lot. I like singles from Black Sunday and Doggystyle more than their host albums.

Voted for U2 because of "Lemon," "Babyface," and the fact that this is the first and last time I'd ever vote for'em.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

Another for Zooropa. Don't have the urge to play In Utero much anymore.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

pretty much what Alfred said, including my Zooropa vote (still my fav U2 album); I rate In Utero somewhat lower, I gather. Vs. is overlong but has at least two very good EPs contained within, and I have fond memories of In Pieces, though haven't heard it in years.

Euler, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)

feeling warm toward In Utero because i just read the 33 1/3 about it, so voting for that.

Vs. is overlong but has at least two very good EPs contained within

"this OK album would make a great EP" is one of my least favorite critical tropes ever (i think i might have a thread about it somewhere in the archives), and your new twist makes it even more meaningless!

The People's Republic of Padgettstan (some dude), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)

lol I'm not a critic, just an amateur hack, but what I'm trying to say is that I think of albums as ≠ collections of singles based on some vague sense of cohesion, and EPs as just little albums. So there are units of cohesion within Vs., like this:

EP 1:

"Go" – 3:12
"Animal" – 2:49
"Daughter" – 3:55
"Glorified G" – 3:26

EP 2:

"Rearviewmirror" – 4:44
"Rats" – 4:15
"Leash" – 3:09
"Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town" – 3:15

Euler, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 16:47 (seventeen years ago)

if your point is just that each half of the album ends with a bad/boring/long song, then yeah, I agree (although I'd save "Dissident" over some others). but all of Pearl Jam's albums are uneven, and Vs. is actually their shortest, so "overlong" isn't the word I'd use to knock it per se.

The People's Republic of Padgettstan (some dude), Tuesday, 30 December 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

yeah you've basically got it. Another way to put it is that the album could have been a tighter collection of songs, and the reaction to the inevitable rerelease or box set would be like "holy shit these guys saved a song as big as "Dissident", wow they were snake eyes in those days".

Euler, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

fuck the challops, in utero

Doggystyle but likejanet. a lot, too.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 22:19 (seventeen years ago)

Favorites are In Utero and Doggystyle, picking between them seems arbitrary. Zooropa a distant 2nd.

where are Ned and Dan? We need Songs of Faith and Devotion devotees.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 30 December 2008 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

all choices other than janet, music box and doggystyle are null & void. especially the nirvana one.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

Black Sunday

Timezilla vs Mechadistance (blueski), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 02:23 (seventeen years ago)

all choices other than janet, music box and doggystyle are null & void. especially the nirvana one.

That is really rockist.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 05:31 (seventeen years ago)

lex in closet rockism??!!?!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 05:41 (seventeen years ago)

strange list. some absolute shite of the highest order alongside some of the year's true gems.

went with in utero

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 06:00 (seventeen years ago)

in utero. obv.

Live from the Witch Trials (SeekAltRoute), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 06:06 (seventeen years ago)

Unplugged is worse in theory than reality.

Eazy, Wednesday, 31 December 2008 07:35 (seventeen years ago)

(I mean, any other contemporary Clapton album has the glossy production, whereas this is just live unadulturated instruments and is a step up.)

pazuzu's petals (latebloomer), Wednesday, 31 December 2008 07:44 (seventeen years ago)

Not a good Billboard vintage. Voted for Depeche Mode's worst ever album.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 1 January 2009 00:40 (seventeen years ago)

I like this year. Even the crap is really good crap.

Still, nothing beats Janet's best album. (Or, at least, the one tied with the album on either side for the title.)

Eric H., Thursday, 1 January 2009 02:13 (seventeen years ago)

Black Sunday.

u s steel, Thursday, 1 January 2009 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

Voted for U2 because of "Lemon," "Babyface," and the fact that this is the first and last time I'd ever vote for'em.

Fuck "Lemon," the true EPIC is "Life Is a Lemon and I Want My Money Back."

Abbott of the Trapezoid Monks (Abbott), Thursday, 1 January 2009 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

i'll take my favorite nirvana album over my 4th-favorite u2 album and janet, snoop and cypress hill's singles.

i'll also note my surprise that some of these hit #1. (that billy joel album? huh.)

tipsy mothra, Thursday, 1 January 2009 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Monday, 5 January 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

Black Sunday. There's not that much variation between the different songs on it though, but it's all solid and good, so who cares?

my fingers is a jellyfish (omar little), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

my problem isn't that nirvana won, but that U2 beat Snoop. straight fucked.

ian, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 00:15 (seventeen years ago)

River of Dreams - Billy Joel 0

;_;

Mad Vigorish (Eisbaer), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 00:17 (seventeen years ago)

of the zeros I gotta go with Garth; fuck that Billy Joel record, wow the title track is an annoying p.o.s., compared to earlier doo-wop ripoffs that were totally fun.

Euler, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 04:09 (seventeen years ago)

I love how the two best-selling records out of all of these garnered exactly zero votes.

(*゚ー゚)θ L(。・_・) °~ヾ(・ε・ *) (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 6 January 2009 04:11 (seventeen years ago)

Bodyguard and Garth?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 04:20 (seventeen years ago)

Not for nothing, but In Utero is far and beyond the best record out of everything listed, and it's not remotely surprising that it recieved more votes than all the other albums combined (except that's probably not true, but it's probably close). .. whereas Nevermind was a boring win for 1991 because it's Rolling Stone magazine's favorite Nirvana album, and because Nevermind sold 10x what In Utero did (probably also not true, my maths are no good today).

billstevejim, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 04:26 (seventeen years ago)

jeez, that u2 album mostly sucks. otherwise, top four is otm.

Ioannis, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 10:49 (seventeen years ago)

vs. shouldn't have been touched in this poll

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 12:53 (seventeen years ago)

argh i forgot how much i liked all the Get A Grip singles at the time (not just because of Alicia Silverstone)
