Gotta go with Braid...

soundofair, Saturday, 3 January 2009 17:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I once liked Braid enough to go to a Hey Mercedes concert and download a Firebird Project album, so I'll go with them. Although, in retrospect, I only listened to "Killing a Camera", "A Dozen Roses" and "Never Will Come for Us". It's been a few years since I listened to any of them. Humming the last two in my head, I'm guessing they haven't aged well, but I bet "Killing a Camera" still holds up.

The drumming on the Braid album is incredible. The songs are, too, really! I saw a whole hell of a lot of these bands in that '97-98 stretch. I was always a big Dischord fan and people I knew who were also into more arty punk just HATED this stuff. But all of these acts had some tunes!

Walter Galt, Tuesday, 10 July 2012 12:46 (eleven years ago) link

Love all these. Kinda. Not going to listen to them again to find out.

Best heard on cassette in a smokey little hatchback en route to see your mate's hardcore band support the latest Tim Kinsella travesty. Other cassettes included Native Nod "Today Puberty, Tomorrow the World", Cable "When Animals Attack", Chisel "It's 8AM All Day" and Kill Rock Stars compilation that never got listened to. "Twoism" by Boards of Canada would soundtrack the ride home.

same goes for "something to write home about" - its a great album tied up w/ a lot of late teens nostalgia for me, but it just doesn't ~fit~ with Nothing Feels Good and Frame and Canvas the same way Four Minute Mile does.

♆ (gr8080), Wednesday, 11 July 2012 05:31 (eleven years ago) link

The higlight of Four Minute Mile, though, is the least emo sounding song - the total Weezer one where he goes "Oh Amy / Don't hate me / for running away from you" or whatever with that synth riff. Didn't the synth player break apart and form Reggie & The Full Effect?

She Got the Shakes, Wednesday, 11 July 2012 07:12 (eleven years ago) link

I saw The Get-Up Kids reunion show on their Euro tour last september. They were still quite good but had gotten significantly older. They ended their set with that Oh Amy-song and Ten Minutes from Something To Write Home About.

I recently found out that Rop Pope, TGUK's bassplayer, is also playing bass in Spoon (who are one of my favorite bands since the last two years).

love this:

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/21125-nothing-feels-good/

The world of Nothing Feels Good doesn't pinpoint specific, identifiable emotions. It is a state of being, one where an overactive mind and overstimulated body are aren’t exactly at war, but struggling to attain common ground. It’s feeling like your heart is pumping Mountain Dew straight to your brain and your central nervous system can’t be trusted. Davey von Bohlen himself is at a loss for words to describe it: many of Nothing Feels Good’s inscrutable, quotable lyrics are a result of internal miscommunication: "I got my hands on the one hand, and I don’t know where to put them", "I married a room, where I’ll at least keep my hands in order", "how do I explain your body to the rest of my day?"
