ILM: An Arbitrary Road Map

Gary Giddins put this enjoyable little survey-type thing together. Seems to me like the regulars here might be able to do something similar--an ILM road map? Anyone else up to try?

M Matos, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

What would an ILM list of essential songs, 1945-present, look, without repeating artists? I'd have to guess that "Get Ur Freak On" or "Digital Love" would be the 2001 entry...or would they? Since Douglas has already called Louis Jordan's "(You Dyed Your Hair) Chartreuse" the greatest record ever made here, it would be the 1949 entry. and so on....

M Matos, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

that's look LIKE, sorry

M Matos, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

and one song per year only, in case you didn't bother reading the Giddins link

M Matos, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Something like this where everyone was assigned a year randomly would be really interesting.

Kris, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

it would; I'm sort of thinking a mix of strongly-felt individual picks (i.e. Douglas on Jordan) and consensus-type stuff (i.e. "Get Ur Freak On" and/or "Digital Love")

M Matos, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Does this board have the facilities to allow us to do this? is so I'd love to give it a go. Why not start in 1941?

"Skyliner" by Harry Barnet and his orchestra.

Kris England., Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The ILM canon, at last.

DeRayMi, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

LOL! look at the photo for 1982's entry...

jamie, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

But you've got to admit it "Fuses audacious power with mercuric reflexes"

Kris.

Kris England., Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Better yet, could some charitable soul kindly clarify the difference between ILM and ILX?

Mark, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The X stands in for either the E or the M.

Josh, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

some ideas that come to mind, based on previous threads: for 1977, Althea & Donna's "Uptown Top Ranking." for 1990, My Bloody Valentine's "Soon" (in honor of Ned, among others; "Soon" was released as a single a year before Loveless came out). for 1993, the House Crew, "Euphoria (Nino's Dream)." any others come to mind?

M Matos, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Since Giddens' was done by an individual and he even kind of admits that it shows the mark of that, I think an ILM-done 'road map' would be quite a bit different, and suffer the same kinds of problems that consensus-hunting threads on ILM usually do. Not that that's a reason not to try it, but.

Josh, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I am guessing The Fall will be nominated for something (or possibly everything). How about "L.A." for '85?
I'd also like to nominate Coltrane's "Naima" for 1959 because that song is the most beautiful thing ever.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 4 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Boney M, Rasputin, 1978. Chic, I want your love 1979. Michael Jackson, Billy Jean 1983. The Fall, Wings/Kicker conspiracy, er 1983.

I think I need to think about this a bitmore.

Kris.

Kris England, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

for 1993, the House Crew, "Euphoria (Nino's Dream)

Matos i love you! but, perhaps not just 93, it could stand in for all the years.

the only thing with these consensus lists is they all end up very similar

gareth, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

1964 - Past, Present and Future by the Shangri-La's (or is it 1965?)

I think the random year thing would be a great idea for an FT feature, actually! Who's up for it?

Tom, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'd be prepared to contribute, as long as I get 1958: "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)" by Domenico Modoguno.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

If we can do albums, I'll nominate both of James Last's Nonstop Party LP's from 1966 and make a case for his medleys as a forerunner of bootlegs & the instant pop-ification of everything.

fritz, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I'm totally up for any random collaborative FT piece.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Tom: 1966, I think - which is just as well as Dr.C owns 1965, I suspect)(as Robin C owns 1971)

ha ha I am going to grab 1976 while the going's good and annoy the punks:

53 feeling good
72 either Virginia plain or hot butter
77 I feel love
78 La freakbr>79 should really be pop music
80 Ace of Spades
81 Love Action
82 Party fears two
83 Let the music play
84 Dr Mabuse
85 never understand
86 panic
87 pump up the volume
88, tricky either voodoo ray or freak scene
89 Oh I dunno, I'll leave the 90's to the youngsters...and the oldsters can fill in the other gaps.

Click on the link that says LUSENET and you will find a whole world or largely irrelevant forums. One of them is I Love Everything, of which ILM is but a spin-off if I understand correctly.

1981 has to be "That's the Joint." Giddins stopped in 2001 so I think this should too; besides, "I Am Trying to Break Your Heart," like the rest of the Wilco record, is a piece of shit

M Matos, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Giddins only stopped at 2001 because he can't travel through time. However, I have been to the end of 2002 and back, and I can tell you that nothing better than the Wilco is going to come out this year.

o. nate, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Also, "Can I Get A Soul Clap" is better than "That's The Joint".

what y'all think?

M Matos, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think I'd like to nominate "Sugar Sugar" for 1969, as it's my favorite song. And my favorite year in pop.

Also "Goodbye to Love" for 1972.

Arthur, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

1948 should really be the Orioles' "It's Too Soon to Know"

M Matos, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

I think I'd like to nominate "Sugar Sugar" for 1969, as it's my favorite song.

Bit of history for you, Arthur! It was the first ever song played by KUCI when it when on the year that very year. :-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Personally I think "Das Modell" is cooler than "The Robots" and the total lack of Sex Pistols seems baffling given the heavy discussion of 'em lately ("Anarchy in the UK" was '76, right? That over Boston, I think) but other than that it looks pretty good.

Nate Patrin, Wednesday, 5 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Ned-I wish I could get KUCI up here. I can't even get KXLU in my neighborhood, just that snoozy KCRW.

Back to thread: Looks great so far, but I prefer "Don't You Want Me" to "Love Action". I just found a cassette of Dare at a thriftshop a couple of weeks ago, and I'm amazed that I'm still not sick of "Don't You Want Me", despite its being #1 EVERYWHERE for a year.

As I already said, Shangri-Las is '66 not '64 so you'll have to find another year for Dylan (B.Boys in '71 okay by me, but Robin C may disagree)

Virginia Plain is 1972. Tough choice between that and Arthur's 'Goodbye To Love' of course. A third alternative: "Close to the Edge", all 18 glorious minutes of it!

Anyway, that frees up 1973 - could we have T.Rex there? (i.e. "20th Century Boy")

We seem to have ignored UK punk and post-punk entirely (1980 should really be Joy Division's "Atmosphere". Also, New Order"s "Bizarre Love Triangle" is better for 1986. The Smiths should be bumped to 1983 ("Hand In Glove"), and to ensure MJ is still in there somewher, how about "I Want You Back" by The Jackson 5 for 1970?

1967: something from VU & Nico - "Femme Fatale"?

2002: "Weak Become Heroes", no question.

Jeff W, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

1967 - the Velvet Underground - "Sister Ray"

J Blount, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The list is looking pretty good but if we're thinking of adding a T.Rex track then It would have to be "Metal Guru" which I think is 1972.

Witcheta lineman is a definite as it is quite clearly the best record ever but what about "Galveston" which I think was the same year? can't we have both or why not add "By the time I get to Phoenix" to complete the trilogy?

Dry the rain by the Beta band (1997) and Roadrunner by Jonathan Richman (1977 I think)

Spice girls, "Wannabe" (1996)

Not sure when the Smokey Robinson track was made but it wasn't a hit until 1969 (at least in the UK, not sure about the US) And I've always had a soft spot for that Alice Cooper track.

But Poison? Are you having a bad hair day Jel?

If I'm going to make a final push for a few of my choices:

1965: "Downtown" Petula Clarke
1977: "(Nothing But) Flowers" Talking Heads
1978: "Ever Fallen In Love With Someone (You Shouldn't Have Fallen In Love With)?" The Buzzcocks
1982: "Little Red Corvette" Prince
And the lack of nominations for 1999 really makes me want to nominate something that I love but'd get shouted down for for even suggesting...

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

suggest it anyway

2012

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Focus Group Winners:

1999 - Eminem - "My Name Is"

2000 - Sisqo - "The Thong Song" and Outkast - "B.O.B"

2001 - Missy Elliot - "Get Ur Freak On" and Basement Jaxx - "Romeo"

2002 - wait and see

Since Michaelangelo had the idea I think his decision should be final on conflicted years, BTW - i.e. no Wilco ha ha.

let me go back on an earlier slip: NO 2002! NONE!

M Matos, Thursday, 6 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

It'd just end up being some damn Ashanti project anyway.

J Blount, Friday, 7 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

Damn, that list does look good (and pretty representative of the ILM aesthetic). I heart your 1960 choice, Matos. Would that be the Matos edit? ;-)

(There's a performance of "Kontakte" here in Brussels next week actually, with video and stuff being projected at the same time. Karlheinz homself is not involved tho'. I'll probably go and will report back)

one year passes...
Some maniac put together a 6-CD set based on Giddins' list...and Robert Christgau just gave it an A+.

I just traded Matos for a copy of the Giddins Roadmap, it's great. There are some true gems in there that I've not heard like "Mosquito Knees." Totally cool. Maybe Xgau is throwing Giddins some props cuz he'll miss him at the Voice.

now we can debate what gets on for 2003; amazing.

"return to heaven" by comets on fire gets my vote. was the record released in 2002, though? I'm not sure if it was or not. So, in the event that's too soon...

"on fire" by lightning bolt, then. catchy and heavy and CATCHY!! and HEAVY!!! and dancey for all you 'dance music' fans--all music is dance music!

(do i look like a feeb?)
