"Erik, that's The Beatles for Christ sake!!!"

Last week I was visiting a friend and as i liked the music he was playing, I asked what it was.

"Erik, that's The Beatles, for Christ sake!!!" was his obviously rude remark.

Anyone else had this nerd-alert moments or similar musical knowledge lapses?

my own personal favourite would have to be going up to my local indie-disco d.j. and asking 'is this gallon drunk' ? and him saying 'no...it's morrissey' then staring at my t.shirt... of morrissey. it was 10 years ago at least.

"Hey guys! (I excitably remark to my friends a couple years ago) You gotta hear this group I found out about called Daft Punk!"
Insert chorus of laughter and mockery at being about a year behind the times. Serves me right for not having MTV. "My mom listens to that CD (Homework) in her car on the way to work!" my friend Jamie told me. I lift a middle finger in front of my beet-red face.

Josh was shocked a short while ago when I couldn't recognise Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone" as used on The Avalanches' Gimix mixtape.

in a car last year, listening to a cd and discussing my upcoming 21st birthday:
friend: "oh, you have to play this song at your party"
minna: "yeah, totally. what is it?"
friend: "umm... it's 'blue monday', minna"

minna, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've had my moments. Brian one time expressed incredulity that I didn't recognize the Specials' first album. This prompted me to note that I had never heard it in the first place beyond the singles.

You're such a square, Finney.

I'd be proud of that one Tim.

In a restaurant, "Gloria" playing, off a Van Morrison best-of (ecchhh...)

fellow diner: "you know, I think this is my favorite Rolling Stones song."

big embarrasment.

My whole family were totally flabberghasted when my Dad failed to recognise Spandau Ballet's "Gold", which I'd have thought everyone in Britain alive in the eighties must have heard - especially my dad!

I take great pride in my eclectic knowledge and lapses. We were listening to a Future Sound of London mix and I was happily identifying "Rolling with Rai" and explaining about Algerian Rai music. When the mix (and the subject) moved on to "Riders on the Storm". "Who's that then?" Asked my incredulous friends.

You aren't going to believe this but I once mistook a Zappa bootleg for the Stooges

dave q, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's easy to not realise that 'Riders On the Storm' is by the Doors, since it's actually good...

This just happened to me a few hrs ago: Listening (I thought) to the new Bowie "Heathen" album, thinking "Aw fuck! This is fantastic!" before realizing that "Heathen" was still sitting on my table and my CD player was already two tracks into "Lodger"

Oddly enough, Julio and I were in a hip Queen St. restaurant today at lunchtime, and this thing came on that I recognized, but couldn't place what it was...it had a very classic rock feel, something that I know I should know without thinking so hard. Well, the vocals started in and I was scared: was this actually the Beatles? Was I going to have to post to this thread and admit that I couldn't identify the Beatles either? (Julio was, at this point, of no help at all, knowing only one Beatles album despite having been a huge Oasis fan.) Well, turns out that it was a Wings album, which is why it sounded like Mr. Beatles after all, and I don't feel so bad because while I recognize McCartney, I really have little use for Wings.

Oddly enough, I was listening to the radio the other day in the car, and this song came on which made me ask, "Who the hell is this crap band who's ripping off Oasis?" Turns out it was Oasis' new single.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

will someone please make a julio liking oasis joke for me?

Josh, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You have to do your own dirty work here, mister.
