Blind Melon - "No Rain"

Thinking about Yes for some reason made me think of this and it stayed in my head for a day or two. Maybe because I could sort of see Yes playing something like this (with less straightforward lyrics). Anyway I think it's among my favourite singles of the 90s.

Hippie!

adam, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this song bugs the shit out of me and i think i'm not alone

Ron, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

you are not alone ron

also didn't they overplay it to death in canada too, sundar? i didnt like it even before it was overplayed to death, but the fact that it became so ubiquitous disturbed me greatly - you could never escape the song!! or that video! god i hated that video! with the bee-girl! i wanted to punch them! and god that voice, i hate that voice! and they would always be playing that song somewhere!! in the grocery store, on the radio, in...in NIGHTMARES....etc. ack for years!! years and years!! i bet in a few yrs that song will be on classic rock radio! and once it's enbalmed in classic rock radio no one will EVER HAVE A CHANCE TO DESTROY IT FOR AT LEAST HALF A CENTURY!! agghhh!

Awful song, and the band were inept and directionless; however, I did stand next to the singer for a few minutes at a Guns'n'Roses concert, and he was pretty cute.

Sean, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

inept and directionless? their second album was pretty decent.

Josh, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

ahh its on tv right now!! ahhhhh bzzzzzzz!

chaki, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Sorry, Sundar, I'm with everyone else here. First heard it and thought it sounded like Axl Rose fronting...oh, Skynyrd or something. Not a good combination at all, and it's one of the few songs that made me turn the volume down.

"All I can say...is that this song is pretty lame...that I ain't got a brain...and I feel no PAAAAAAAAAAAIN."

Not an exact rhyme, but it sums up my thoughts on the song. And Hoon as well, since being dead he would indeed not be feeling much right about now.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Shannon Hoon was the voice of his generation.

J Blount, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Shannon Hoon was the voice of his generation. "

Sad thing is, that's probably true.

Daniel_Rf, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it's a great song. It's easily one of my favorite singles from the early '90s.

Phil, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

inept and directionless? their second album was pretty decent.

My brother actually bought me this (who knows why) and so I've actually heard it. I thought it stunk. I was too embarassed to bring it to Amoeba to trade in, I just threw it away. He's still a cutie, though (Josh and Shannon).

Sean, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't Chris Farley dress up as the Bee Girl when Blind Melon played on SNL? That fucked with my head, man.

Nate Patrin, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I felt sorry for the singer. Imagine the last thing you ever see being Axl Roses' gumpy face.

Lynskey, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

classic, but then again Im enjoying SM3 and American Standard at the moment so no surprises there.

Kiwi, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Chris Farley and Shannon Hoon together? A nineties calvacade of death for ya right there.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

com on down to the waters edge Ned

god knows what they were on when they recorded the 2nd album, some of it is pretty messed up, but "Mouthful of Cavities" is beautiful.

james devon, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't like how shannon hoon was martyred ... they were a succesful band (true), made people happy with their music (true) and probably put some effort into their craft, but really, did he deserve to be sainted? especially for dying of smack?

fields of salmon, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who sainted him?

Josh, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have no opinion on Saint Hoon, really, but I am with Sundar on this one -- I love this song. During the time when it was really at its peak I was on a fishing boat in the Berring Sea, so I missed the radio overkill. It was the first song I heard when I hit dry land, I think, and I liked it right away. Then again, I like Skynnard, too. Never heard another Blind Melon song, but this was a good one.

Mark, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

who sainted him?

confused, emotionally fragile hippie girls everywhere. and the men who love them.

fields of salmon, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Would I be wrong in saying that Blind Melon may have in fact predated the ghastly "sensitive" cod-metal currently inundating worldwide audiences (Staind and so on)? Regardless of that, I never liked the song and the video annoyed the hell out of me.

Jorge Mourinha, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like this song too, though like other people are saying I never really need to hear it again. It was several things that did it for me: the very lazy guitar line; the vocal break when the drums shake lightly but purposefully back in (the "aaa-aaa-aaane" part); and I think the treatment on his voice was pretty novel and extreme in those days, especially paired with the folky Donovanesque instrumentation. It remember thinking that it sounded futuristic. Rural futurism. The video was rub.
