I fear voting Demons Sing Love Songs may out me as a mere casual occasional Unwound listener, but damn, that song has crawled under my skin and webbed around my mind like nothing else in their catalogue.

(One day I will find the time to play all their records until I love them as much as I feel I ought to)

"December" is the one song that sticks with me years down the road.

great record

their least-best album -- it doesn't 'kick ass' like the previous ones, but it's a nice one.

This had the highest live/studio quality ratio, though, especially with Brandt on keyboards, and the live versions of "Terminus" were really phenomenal. "Look A Ghost", and "Below The Salt", but "Terminus" wins this one. I love the march-turn-strings thing it does.

i really hate the vocals on this one

Mr. Que, Monday, 16 March 2009 15:43 (fifteen years ago) link

but i voted Scarlette

Mr. Que, Monday, 16 March 2009 15:45 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah the restraint is curious and frustrating. "Scarlette", for example, begins like it's going to be one of those rough old throat-destroying Unwound jams, but then Justin whispers like a witch with laryngitis. (the vocals were a lot louder in the live versions a la older Unwound.)

exactly exactly

this whole album is great but my vote goes to "Below the Salt". repetitive, haunting, seemingly endless, but never boring cuz the band actually knows how to use dynamics, build/release tension, etc.

if you like it then you shoulda put a donk on it (bernard snowy), Monday, 16 March 2009 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

yeah the feedback noises at the start are great.

this was my first unwound album!

I think this album is gorgeous and highly (and strangely) underrated.

I would love to get it on vinyl as it's the only Unwound album I don't have on vinyl.

Saw them live in a basement in '92 back when Brandt was drumming, before Sara joined. Lifelong fave.

Aw, I wish I would have seen this. This is def my favorite Unwound album, and one of my favorite records of the decade so far. I would have trouble deciding between "One Lick Less" and "Below the Salt" and "We Invent You"

no votes for "Summer Freeze" or "Look A Ghost" = o_O

not a bad track on this album
Summer Freeze definitely deserved a vote
i went with Scarlette, though

I can't believe "One Lick Less" didn't get a vote. Such a beautiful song.

I've owned this album since it was released (I bought it on the strength of positive reviews & recommendations etc). I've always been well-disposed towards it, but I've never really got it. I'm now tempted to give it (yet) another listen. Maybe one day it will click.

one year passes...

I can't believe "One Lick Less" didn't get a vote. Such a beautiful song.

Unbelievably, I still think this is OTM. Man, nice point Z S

I'm pretty sure I'd rank this as one of my top 10 of the decade. Every year I get obsessed with it for a few months and think I've finally blown my wad, but sure enough I buy a new calendar and there it is again, every day. What a wonderful note to go out on. Did any of them ever record anything after this?

Via TinyMixTapes, the band is releasing a live double LP of Leaves Turn Inside You:

Unwound are showing off some artifacts from their last tourdates in 2001 and 2002: videos, interviews, fliers, all that jazz. Plus new t-shirts! This museum never closes, you gum-chewing, naked freak; you can sit and listen to Unwound live shows all damn night long if you want. But if that’s not enough for you, on December 11, the band is also releasing a live double LP version of their 2001 masterpiece, Leaves Turn Inside You, consisting of live performances from their final tour. Each track was recorded by Unwound superfan and bootlegger, Mike Zeigler — a fella referred to as “The Kid” and deeply devoted to Nirvana and rock ‘n’ roll in general — who accompanied the band on their final tour.

just scored a relatively cheap copy of Empire and marvelling at this album all over again. one of the best-paced and sequenced double LPs ever made, I reckon.

for whatever reason i was imagining running for political office and someone asking during an interview what my favorite album was and thinking this would be a good answer.

not *too* obscure, no objectionable content; your campaign manager has signed off.

Just got back into this one recently (after pulling the MP3s from the hard drive of my old computer, hah). I'm kind of obsessed with the backwards guitar on "October All Over" -- Maybe the best imitation of Sonic Youth (weird/moody/sexy/menacing) by any band that isn't Sonic Youth?

The live album sounds good, too (though I've only listened on the execrable Bandcamp mobile app, which never fails to introduce awkward pauses between tracks/sometimes randomly skips over a track)

"demons sing love songs" reminds me of the maze music from "golgo 13: top secret episode"
