have I gone completely mad or is this actually quite good?

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's sort of like all the good bits of prog classicism scaled down to a three-minute pop song, and the lyrics are funny and observant and evocative plus Phil Collins doesn't actually sound like "Phil Collins" at all (ie his voice isn't whiningly earnest and literal- minded)

Sundar? Anyone? Help me on this!

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The *only* Genesis song I've ever liked is "In Your Wardrobe". for some reason. I don't know why either.

I haven't heard this song. The only Genesis I have is Nursery Cryme, which I've had for less than a year. It's like I have a reputation or something.

that's because all genesis fans are serial rapist-murderers, of course.

Mmm it's better than Land of Confusion and Illegal Alien... wish I could do more for you Robin. (I'll confess that I have a soft spot for Turn It on Again and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.)

Did I just say that?

Andy K, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You did. Stop pretending you're all about microhouse. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yr rt -- I'm all about microprog.

Andy K, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...and macroprog. After all, this thread is supposed to be about Pigeons.

Andy K, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Never heard this - is it before or after they went crap? - but I live for their early stuff. Like, "Live" and "Selling England" are my favourite albums. But the rest are great too. btw, was it really the same band that did, "Genesis to Revelation" AND things like "Nursery Cryme"? I find it a bit hard to believe. Their first album was NOT great.

Anna Rose, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anna rose - it's before they went pop big time but it was a quite big pop hit anyway. off 'and then there were three' i believe (never heard that album tho). ie i guess about 1979

unknown or illegal user, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oh maybe you were asking about pigeons

unknown or illegal user, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

in which case i dunno

unknown or illegal user, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Whatever. I'm not too bugged about hearing anything new of theirs - I'm content with what I know. Listen to "Live" every day almost, "Selling England" twice weekly and sing "Get 'em out by Friday" in the shower every night.

Anna Rose, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Robin,

You have gone completely mad.

Actually, IIRC, it's okay, but wasn't it kind of a throwaway? That's the one that starts off "Who put 15 tons of shit on Trafalgar Square" or something like that, right? Doesn't it have a plinky note that plays all-the-way through the chord changes? Anyway, I guess like the other two on the Spot the Pigeon EP ("Match of the Day" and especially "Inside and Out") better.

Joe, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sundar, I think your reputation comes from the fact that you once signed yourself "and I fantasise about English countrysides while listening to Yes, too" :).

Joe - of course "Pigeons" is a bit of a throwaway: I just have a fondness for the way it takes a lot of very very quintessential, even stereotypical prog elements (the story song, self- consciously "English" lyrics, the passing of time etc) and distills them into a three-minute pop song. I think someone here said that Jethro Tull were prog's only good singles band: I can't help thinking that Genesis ought to have scaled their form down to single-length more often before they went all AOR and shit.
