is it me or are they supa lame?

saw them last night (greetings from sonar btw) and they were nearly as bloody awful as they were the first time i saw them. why is warp proceeding with them????

hmmm they ruined my night. i was well up for some jeff mills, but made the mistake of going to see the ´pop and then felt shitty and tired....

sonar is not that great to be honest. its ok, but its outgrowing its venue. need to rethink. for instance, blocked off venue due to excess numbers to events like DNTEL/safety scissors, and kid 606? that shouldnt be happening.

dont want to be totally negative though. it is pretty cool i guess... er, the jurys out.

is it me

yes. but by all means, stick with jeff mills. constant evolution going on there.

i haven't had the chance to see them live...so that i can't get a figure on...but record-wise, apc are pretty badass and that is why warp is releasing them.

Yeah, I like APC on record a lot. I haf not seen 'em live either (due to a strange curse as I have intended to each of the last two times they played in SF). I suppose I could see them with DJ Shadow next week, but it's not on a convenient nite so I'll probably skip it.

i saw them about two months ago and they were amazing.

beans must be seen to be believed -- his jerky-robot-dancehall type butt-shaking dance and his unbelievable (polyrhythmic) rhymes just floored me. they definitely had an absurdist vibe, but i dug all their weird sounds and bizarre synth playing. it scared the living shit out of a lot of the heads who went to see them (they must have been expecting de la soul) so i think the show was a huge success.

their albums are a bit patchy though, as much as i love some of the moments on arrhythmia it really drags in the last few tracks.

maybe the apc had a bad show or something that day, ambrose. when i saw them a few months back i was amazed by their performance; they absolutely blew dj vadlam off the stage. i would love the chance to see them do a show with shadow.

dyson, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

you mean dj vadim? geez wouldn't take much to blow that guy out of the water ... i've found his stuff tremendously uninspired. at least apc gets people scratching their heads. everybody either loved or hated the show.

fields of salmon, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

oops, it was vadim. and his set was alright; although i spent the majority of it replaying apc's set over and over in my head.

dyson, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

. "i would love the chance to see them do a show with shadow."

um, why? it's not like their approaches are similar or anything.

Bob Zemko, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

no, i realize that. 2 good artist = 1 good show. it would certainly be beter than seeing anti-pop play a show with sher, now wouldn't it?

dyson, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I now have a mental image of Anthony Sher reciting Shakespeare to a hip hop beat.

Jeff W, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that last post belongs under the "bands you wish existed" thread

dyson, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i meant cher. whatever. that's what happens when you try to post while your boss has his back to you.

dyson, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

twenty-three years pass...

do we think this is real and more precisely, do we think if i ordered the hat that it would show up at my house:

Thread title is ridiculous. Why? was in Anticon, not Antipop

Modollno Kahn (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 13:47 (six months ago)

tbh, saw thread title+date and assumed the topic was an intended co-op discussion. chalked that up to neurodivergence upon opening thread. ty for confirmation that i'm not as weird as i think!

here's a fun out-of-context quote from earlier in this thread:

his jerky-robot-dancehall type butt

i liked both apc and why? on records at the time, but admittedly haven't revisited in over a decade

austinato (Austin), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 14:01 (six months ago)

maybe Boring is making a joke, but i thought the thread title was saying "antipop ... why do people like them?" not a reference to Yoni Wolf.

alpine static, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 19:50 (six months ago)

I was making a horribly formed joke

Modollno Kahn (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 19:53 (six months ago)

anyways the out of print ends against the middle is still my favorite of theirs

Modollno Kahn (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 19:55 (six months ago)

I meant tragic epilogue

Modollno Kahn (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 20:02 (six months ago)

and the hat? do you think the hat would arrive at my house?

alpine static, Tuesday, 2 December 2025 21:16 (six months ago)

I have faith that the hat is real

Modollno Kahn (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 2 December 2025 21:23 (six months ago)

I had a theory like 10 years ago that mainstream rap had come to embrace Tragic Epilogue, though now I can't remember what act/album made me think this (Kanye...?)
