the fans give rappers what they need

After the hideous mismatch that put missy's godawful nudge-nudge MDMA references against the kind of sterile house doormat residue that is played on the radio when everyone should down 'Crasher 'gettin on one matey', i thought it would be helpful if we guided rappers towards producers who would make grate partnerships.

i'll start: roots manuva and boards of canada ODB and lee perry ja rule and kenny G outkast and phil spector

is that legible? not my fault... anyway, eminem and georgio moroder

Barnaby, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

r kelly and gary glitter

Barnaby, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Roots Manuva and Boards of Canada sounds like the shittest thing on earth and 4 My People is a a good song.

Ronan, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i agree with ronan - i don't think i'd want to hear the result of that partnership

geeta, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Rodney P and Wilco.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it's clear that if Autechre actually produced a hip-hop album it would be the best ever. The question is, what mc could handle it/would be a good fit?

Jordan, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Snow.

Dom Passantino, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'4 My People' sounded like the most contrived piece of bandwagon jumping since ricky from eastenders went reggae.

Barnaby, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Basement Jaxx really jumped onto the scuzzy kitsch pop house bandwagon didn't they? OH WAIT.

Ronan, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Match the producer and the rapper? All rappers + Crap studios unltd (un stands for unfortunely not) = very happy rap fans, very unhappy world.

Anna Rose, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark stop! STOP!

Ronan, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what about prog-rap anna?

geeta, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"What about prog rap Anna?"

the basement jaxx version was a remix, and was very ordinary for their standards

Barnaby, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are hip hop producers excluded from these dreem matchups? If not I'd I'd like to see Missy produced by the Rockwilda or Swizz Beats, see what happens when she loosens up a little bit, loosens the bindings. If they ARE excluded this is a weird question. DMX and Steve Albini. yuk yuk.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mos def and drexciya (oh! please) urban afro sub futurism any one!

talib kweli and a bit of aphex acid would certainly be interesting

Mc Lyrics born and u-ziq or maybe pure science for a bit of bottom heavy groove with grit?

roots manuva and dead can dance (moody folk doom rap?)

busta rhymes and pantera (bring it on! Rawk rap metal)

princess superstar featuring the hacker (kinda obvious but i like it all the same).

sharivari, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha sharivari some of those suggestions are cool but i didn't think anyone could come up with a combo with worse potential than roots manuva + boards of canada. but roots manuva + dead can dance takes the scary-in-a- bad-way prize, for sure! there's no way anyone will be able to top that one

geeta, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Autechre would be great if you judge by some of the bootlegs out there (Autechre vs Outkast... WOO! Autechre vs The Beatie Boys = best piece of music involving the Beastie Boys in about 7 8 years).

Dan Perry, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow my manuva/BoC suggestion is getting roundly thrashed. much of his first album does have the hip hop with ambient circles and sinister chord shifts that is boards' trademark (so fair enough, i suppose it would be slightly dull to have them do it). dead can dance is a brilliant idea!!

sorry to be a warp-centric saddo, but busta rhymes caning 100mph rhymes to squarepusher? don't mind if i do

Barnaby, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah ... what are we sitting hear dreaming for. This is why bootlegging was invented!

As an aside, I'd love to hear Andy Weatherall make a hip-hop album with some decent rappers. That would be cool!
