I'm being a bit unfair

What bands are you a bit unfair to in your overall judgment of, even if you don't think you'll ever like them they're not as bad as you condemn them to be? I suppose it's like that with me for Radiohead. Who is it for you? (I expect Pink Floyd to be prominent in many lists!!)

Anna Rose, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Manic Street Preachers..."The holy bible" is a pretty good album, its just as people they really annoy me.

Michael Bourke, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Radiohead and Frank Zappa.

nathalie, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yea, maybe radiohead for me also. chuck in beck, underworld, super furry animals, dj shadow, 'underground' hip hop, outkast, i doubt i'll ever actually like any of these bands, but i'm sure they have more to redeem them than i perhaps give them credit for

no, fuck it, they're not good enough!

gareth, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Beck. Echo and the Bunnymen. Pink Floyd. Genesis. Depeche Mode.

Melissa W, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably the Smashing Pumpkins. The amount of time I've raged on against them for being a crock of shite... and yet they could pull a tune out of their backside sometimes as well. White Stripes, Jay-Z, I think I liked a Yes song as well. Once.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think I may have been a bit unfair to Motley Crue.

jel --, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But, I would say, in my defence, that I am nice to many bands that are not much liked here.

jel --, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are those moments you are suddenly grateful for bands that you previously hated. My friend was visiting, and was forcing me to listen to her CDs in the car. She let me choose out of her booklet. Thank heaven for the Smashing Pumpkins greatest hits cd. It saved me from an hour of Dashboard Confessional.

Melissa W, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(the smashing pumpkins greatest hits CD was the best album released in 2001)

jel --, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

WHAT?

They're terrible, I didn't know anyone took the Smashing Pumpkins seriously.

Ronan, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned does.

jel --, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a sad thing when it happens, Ronan, but it's quite prevalent. Especially here. And I live in Chicago (their hometown) making it 100 times worse.

Melissa W, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Uh, what Jel said. Do you want me to go on about the 7 mp3 discs I recently burned of various live shows and unreleased studio and demo stuff of theirs, Ronan? ;-)

One can take the Pumpkins seriously without necessarily having to take Mr. Corgan seriously, I've found.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes but Jel, Ned has SIX Ned's Atomic Dustbin T-Shirts...

Andrew L, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay me! :-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's weird, as cranky as my post was, the second part was an honest statement. They are very very rarely set aside from mainstream dull rock over here, is it an American thing?

I always thought they were one of those bands you like when you're 13. But remembering the last time I had Loveless on in my house and some bloke who was over said "oh this is a bit like smashing pumpkins" I think the Raggett equation could be solved.

I'm very unfair on Aphex Twin, and lots of IDM. I'm also quite unfair on metal because it's all so chronically awful, hahaha.

Ronan, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The whole MBV/Pumpkins connection is definitely there -- Billy C. is a huge fan, "Hummer" is a pretty open tribute, Alan Moulder ended up co- producing Mellon Collie and "Sometimes" off Loveless in particular establishes a fair amount of Pumpkins sonics. That said, it's not the reason I rate the Pumpkins so highly. If anything it's the goth rock part of it all. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Prob'ly the Strokes. Belle and Sebastian. CCR.

Polly, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i'm usually far harsher on music my freinds play me than music i find myself. bear in mind this often involves bands like braid, grade, shrade, thrade, flayed, jade, quaid, paid, wade, and modest mouse.

Barnaby, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to say that I am a bit unfair to Sleater-Kinney, White Stripes, and Smashing Pumpkins because I can't stand Billy Corgan who in my opinion is the heart and soul of the band thus making it impossible to take the band seriously without taking Corgan seriously.

MICHELINE, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can completely understand why people would be hard on Underworld. I mean, how could the same group be responsible for grand things like "Kittens" and "Pearl's Girl" while churning out horrific sludge like 60% of _Second Toughest..._ and _Bruce Lee_? And while I don't hate it per se, the album version of "Cups" is just not right compared to the live version on _Everything, Everything_.

Dan Perry, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not very fair to The Grid

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

radiohead more than anything else. i can't admit that that bunch of prententious pufters are actually half decent...even if i liked "idioteque," it's still a giant aphex rip off.

cybele, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Frank Sinatra. I know he's an innovator, but I still can't get over my preconcieved notion that he's an insufferable prick.

Lord Custos v2.3, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Probably....Radiohead. And I know that if I had been born 5 years later, they might have been one of my favorite bands. I'll admit this: they sound ambitious, and do not sound unintelligent.

dleone, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dave Matthews Band, Jermaine Dupree (i like his production, but everytime he opens his mouth i turn it off without giving it a chance)

Keiko, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Doors really did have a few excellent pop songs. It's just the "insufferable prick" aspect really gets in the way in this case. Also, I don't really hate X as much as I pretend do. Just the vocals most of the time and Exene's Snooty Granny Punker routine. "We created it, let's pick our noses..."

Arthur, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Beastie Boys are probably alright, but unlike other top-pop-folk who make heavy use of Vaguely Kitschy Videos and General Quirkiness they invariably lack the Killer Pop Rush, everything is dry and brittle and loves itself too much.

Alex Linsdell, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
wilco. nas. hüsker dü. genesis (peter gabriel-era).

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 6 November 2003 08:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like some of Sleater-Kinney's stuff and used to be into them around Dig Me Out, but now I resent them for pretty much no sensible reason. I don't even strongly dislike their music, it just does very little for me anymore. But I still feel bitter whenever they come up in discussion, maybe because they are so goddamn beatified by tons of people I know. They have become the popular girl. People get REALLY offended when you harmlessly dis them! It's scary.

Oh, yeah, and the Doors for me too, although I like a few of their songs. My hate for "don't you love her madly" eclipses most of their better points.

I hate the Strokes and any number of 'electro-clash' bands just because they all dress like morons, have stupid fake names, and seem to think they are badasses. I don't care if I'm being unfair, there's enough fantastic music in the world to justify me not wasting my time on it.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i genuinely don't like the strokes' music -- i am not being at all unfair to them, they do not appeal to me at all and i see nothing about them that's worth my time. they epitomize boring american indie, as much as wilco or guided by voices (if not more so).

i concede that i may be a bit unfair to sleater-kinney, though.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never gotten the Sleater-Kinney thing. Never. They are the most boring band in the world to me.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 6 November 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked S-K when I was 20, or something. It's just over now. I don't think they're terrible but there are so many better things. When I saw them live in 9/02 I had already stopped caring, I watched it sitting down from a side view of stage behind chainlink fencing. I wanted to fall asleep. shannon wright was so much more interesting. I can see people liking them, but not the hero worship stuff... that just confuses me. They're not THAT fantastic. ('course I'm probably being hypocritical about that.)

The Strokes do actually suck, though.

Blood and sparkles (bloodandsparkles), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:13 (twenty-two years ago)

CCR, frank sinatra, elvis, the stones, DMB, Dismemberment Plan, emo (excepting the rites of spring, although there are loads of these bands that deserve the verbal lashing, but there have to be a couple good ones somewhere), death cab for cutie

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and those fuckheads Aerosmith

Felcher (Felcher), Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the strokes are indy? hahaha

kephm, Thursday, 6 November 2003 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

pop kids hate 'em for being indie, indie kids hate 'em for being not indie

nate detritus (natedetritus), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i hate 'em cause they suck. flaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Eisbär (llamasfur), Thursday, 6 November 2003 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

"oh, and those fuckheads Aerosmith"

don't go dissin' the 'smith.
