Paul Sci-Fi Soul to thread!

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Blimey, where to start. I would say 90 per cent of this lot counts as a "disco classic". Do you want radio versions or 12" extended mixes however?

Jeff W, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Loose Joints, "Is It All Over My Face?" MUST be included

M Matos, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Will Survive" Gloria Gaynor (I think)

Colin Cooper, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Just get the freakytastick Casablanca Records boxset.

nathalie, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Here's a thread Sundar started with loads more suggestions. Note the date. I was relieved to have something take my mind off of everything going on, if only for a few minutes.

Jackson 5 -----> "Hum Along and Dance" -----> r000lz

Tracer Hand, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Did TW Funkmasters put anything out besides "Love Money"? That song knocks me out every time.

I have to give massive seconds to Klein + MBO and Taana Gardner.

Andy K, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

if it's the same group, Funkmasters also put out rare groove classic "It's Over", a sweet female vocal track with horns that chuggs along similar to "Heartbeat" but brighter and (good) jazzy. Chris Mac(k) (aka Potential Bad Boy) sampled it for his UK garage track "Plenty More".

more disco:
O'Jays - Love Train, Time To Get Down and Darlin' Darlin' Baby
Stargard - Which Way Is Up (more of a funk track)
Ashford & Simpson - It Seems To Hang On
Black Ivory - Mainline (sampled by Omni Trio)
Ecstasy Passion & Pain - Touch And Go (sampled by Foul Play!)
Slick - Space Bass
Michael Jackson - Don't Stop Til You Get Enough

plus gotta mention Rod Temperton:
Heatwave - Boogie Nights and The Grooveline
Michael Jackson - Rock With You and Off The Wall

Paul, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the Off The Wall reissue because it has that freaking bonus track which is basically a FUCKING interview. urgh.

Has anyone mentioned Bobby Orlando? I have now. Gotta love those cheesy disco comps.

nathalie - had a fucking day, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Disco is easily one of my top 7 favourite words of all time. Insisting that Head Music by Suede is disco is a good way to piss people off. Insisting that said album is hugely undervalued masterpiece has similar effect, except this is actually true. Disco things are silver and round.

Alex Linsdell, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Roller skate bearings, mirror balls... I think you've got something here Alex.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

brighter and (good) jazzy

sorry, poor description - more like a glistening paradise

Paul, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
