Also, I'm quite fond of the Very Tall reunion cd from a few years ago, but it's post-stroke so Oscar's playing is definitely more laid back (but still great and more melodic I think).

Oscar Peterson Plays the George Gershwin Song Book = joy in a box.
Second Night Train, obv, and I'll add Ella and Oscar. Soul Espanol = overlooked classic.

Most of the Verve trio records with Brown/Thigpen or Brown/Ellis are really nice. He wasn't exactly a forward-thinking musician so there isn't some groundbreaking or definitive work you need to own. He was more of a great stylist and distiller.

His records don't really take chances but they swing pretty hard and sound great.

Night Train is such a wonderful album. I first listened a decade ago with cloth ears and now I feel it!

No aficionado here! But, been picking up some OP here and there the last couple of years. Been enjoying this OP & Count Basie Satch and Josh on Pablo. Really like the whole Pablo aesthetic too. Oddly framed, mud lens B&W, zine-style almost. Cheap vinyl. Raw power haha.

My college radio-station library was full of Pablo LPs, just as you describe. Great musicians, probably making a record in a day, not coasting but not reaching. There's one album,
