Yeah I know im a month late, but why not celebrate Ian's life all the time.

Simona, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Did anyone see the "Love Will Tear Us Apart" goth video project in "Series 7" where they tear a big poster that says LOVE?

A Nairn, Tuesday, 18 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that has to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen. I really enjoyed the rest of the movie too. oh, and the song is embarrasingly influential on my tender teenage music explorations. i would be guessing that I'm hardly the lone ranger there.

Andrew, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That would only make sense if the poster tore them apart, not vice versa. Or if the song were called "We Will Tear Love Apart".

Curt, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(This is a true story - not a cheap piss-take, btw !)

As a student, I had a poster of Ian Curtis marked 'Love Will..' on my wall (I think it was the 12 inch sleeve), and once, when I was with a couple of friends, we were chatting over the sound of "Dead Popstars" by Altered Images. As the song came to its end, with Clare Grogan screeching "dead, dead, dead, dead, DEAD !" the IC poster came tumbling off the wall. Much to our silent shock, and no mistake. (and it was new-ish Blu-tac, as well !)

Most amazing cover ever? Pretty sure that it is.

Hahah. That Paul Young version is pretty LOLZ. I always read he covered that but never heard it before. Honestly, this is a song that I just don't think it's a good idea for anyone to do a cover of.

Not even ... The Arcade Fire and Bono?!?!

Nope. There are some things you just don't touch. At least the Paul Young one is so ridiculous that it's funny. The AF/Bono one is just sorta sad.

sloth say hi to me (ENBB), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

barney sumner & two other blokes as an acoustic guitar trio. barney sings and plays guitar at the same time! quite good actually.

Clearly the best version has not yet been mentioned.

:-( These all make me sad and not because of the song but because I stand by my original point that it just shouldn't be done.

sloth say hi to me (ENBB), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

The Swinging Erudites had a version where they smushed this together with "Love Will Keep Us Together."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

See now that could be amazing but only because it's absurd.

sloth say hi to me (ENBB), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

I think the Barney track is fine, actually. He sings it creatively, it's THAT voice, and the sound of the acoustic guitars helps things. If they'd had drums it might have ruined it, though.

Imagine being an elevator (Bimble), Tuesday, 9 June 2009 20:46 (seventeen years ago)

that swans version was actually the first one i ever heard. and i was then bitterly disappointed by the original. the voice of the swans singer sounds more like ian curtis than ian curtis himself.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 9 June 2009 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

Here, this is pissing me off. Does anyone know if the B-side/3'06"/Pennine/alternative/better version of Love Will Tear Us Apart is easily obtainable in any kind of digital form? There's a slim chance I've got a vinyl rip of it on an old hard disk somewhere, but fuck knows where.

(This is the original Joy Division 7" I'm talking about here, natch.)

Is that the version that shares the B Side with "These Days"?

Officer Pupp, Sunday, 21 June 2009 10:53 (sixteen years ago)

That's the one. Plays at 33RPM, IIRC.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 21 June 2009 11:06 (sixteen years ago)

I'll put it up if you're really after it. I have very nice rip of the 7".

Millsner, Sunday, 21 June 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

I'd be forever in your debt! I'm just still surprised that this version seems to have slipped through the cracks -- given the myriad of JD collections out there, both official and, er, rather less legal, it seems a surprising omission.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 21 June 2009 11:41 (sixteen years ago)

I think it's actually on 'Permanent', remastered, but that version never sounded right to me. Too harsh.

Enjoy!

Millsner, Sunday, 21 June 2009 11:56 (sixteen years ago)

Oh this is nice to have. Thank you.

I've still got the vinyl! *Beaming and trying not to brag!*

Oh shit, Grimly. What you've done. Now I have to go search for it out in the living room in that shoe box of 7"es and possibly disturb my friend. Oh my goodness. Well, JD is only meant to be listened to on vinyl anyway in my humble opinion. Except when I listen to Substance...LOL. I mean...well Grimly, I think you've made me do a Joy Division blush, here. That's it. I mean, hell, I should probably just shutup and use the link above but if I can find the real article...

A Breath of Fresh Culture (Bimble), Sunday, 21 June 2009 13:01 (sixteen years ago)

Downloading now: thank you, Millsner, you rock mightily. If I can ever return the favour ...

And Bimble: did you find it? Like I say: I could probably find my copy of the 7" in about five minutes; I just don't have easy access to a turntable to play it on ...

I'm starting to put together a mix CD for my 10-year-old nephew and figured this was a must.

a tiny, faltering megaphone (grimly fiendish), Sunday, 21 June 2009 16:47 (sixteen years ago)

I started the process of converting it from my vinyl, if that Permanent version indeed turns out to be too harsh.

IIRC this version was used as an extra track on the 1988 cd single version of Atmosphere, but i'd have to go in the loft to get it to make sure.

Officer Pupp, Sunday, 21 June 2009 18:15 (sixteen years ago)

Found that cd single on Slsk, so it's out there.

I quite like this version

Malcolm Money, Sunday, 21 June 2009 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

I started the process of converting it from my vinyl, if that Permanent version indeed turns out to be too harsh.

It's just quite compressed and extremely bright sounding. I remember hearing the 7" for the first time and thinking "ah, so THIS is how is should sound".
