it actually sounds ... pretty good?

tylerw, Monday, 6 April 2009 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

I like the end of the first clip, where there is loud screaming and applause and Jandek is smiling to himself.

I am using your worlds, Monday, 6 April 2009 22:59 (fifteen years ago) link

i kind of wanted him to throw off his guitar and join the dancers.

this may be the best show i have ever attended. just. fucking. amazing. and only 4 bucks. i'll write more about it later, i just got back from houston.

seriously guys this shit slayed. 75 minutes or so followed by a 10 minute ish encore. (jandek encore!!!) (the sound in the youtubes is not great, the guitar and bass were more evenly matched, volume wise, i am looking forward to the CD release which i am going to give to everyone i know for christmas).

adam, Monday, 6 April 2009 23:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Haha I was already wondering about the cover art for the inevitable live disc.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 6 April 2009 23:41 (fifteen years ago) link

He should go with "Overpowered by Funk" as the title.

I am using your worlds, Monday, 6 April 2009 23:42 (fifteen years ago) link

He keeps taking things to new levels of amazement with these live show concepts. I am really loving nu-Jandek.

i'm wondering like

the half of the audience that's going off? did they just embrace the surprise of jamdek? or did they wander in off the street enticed by the dope grooves? or???

hahaha "Jamdek"

yeah that bassline is pretty sick

On Sunday, April 5, 2009, Jandek performed in Houston, Texas at his first-ever public performance in his hometown. His only other appearance in Houston was a walk-on with improvisational duo Loren Connors and Alan Licht in 2006 [8]. The performance was a matinee show held at Rudyard's Pub and was coordinated by Andy Bradley, chief engineer of Sugar Hill Recordings. Andy paired Jandek with two session musicians for the live event which consisted of a bass and drum funk improvisation accompanying Jandek's guitar and vocals. Jandek used a black pearl Godin Freeway SA electric guitar directly into a Line 6 Spider 2x10" combo amplifier.

caek, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 00:06 (fifteen years ago) link

i didn't think it would be possible to sound any worse than normal jandek music but here it is

crab ringgoon (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 00:08 (fifteen years ago) link

the goons are here! what up goons!!

there were like 200 people there by my rough estimate. i would say that most were really into what he was doing.

the way it started--just that bass lick, the drumming starts and then jandek shredding, doing this fuzzed out sonny sharrock thing--was all it took. uninterrupted 75 minutes of heavy avant noisy funk punctuated with those born under punches style proclamations. "so happy... so SAD... WORK... water."

Mister Craig, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 23:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I love that side-stepping dance move he pulls, that's just like how my dad dances.

The Unbearable Skegness of Being (NickB), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 23:29 (fifteen years ago) link

do you think ... Jandek might be your dad?

tylerw, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 23:31 (fifteen years ago) link

jokes, but wouldn't that be the BEST.

tylerw, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 23:31 (fifteen years ago) link

this is kinda satisfying on another level too

because i guess jandek being who he is i like the fact that he doesn't even seem the conscious of indie rock type jive, like he always plays really pro gear and shit like the rich old dude probably is...this sort of seems perverse in that same way

d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago) link

If that were my dad, he would have followed through with pointy hand gestures.

Is Jandek rich? Surely not through his music?

Yeah - The Rep From Corwood needs to expedite those live releases. One of the upcoming releases will have Flower/Corsano backin' him up! I salivate.

obviously not

Oh boy, Midgard! That's where I go Biking! (sic), Monday, 10 May 2010 22:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Um, sorta... The way it looks he's plowing through the shows [which date back to 2004] in chronological order, but he's not making it snappy enough to suit me. The Representative From Corwood is no spring chicken. He should get on the stick. ;-)

also the wire described his new 9xCD box set of solo piano improvisations as "pitiless" so i'm pretty psyched for that

adam, Thursday, 31 October 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

Not sure I would describe Song of Morgan as improvised, his stuff sounds pretty worked over to me.

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 12 December 2013 02:37 (ten years ago) link

That many hours of solo piano by Jandek would change me in ways I'm maybe not ready for

Jimmywine Dyspeptic, Thursday, 12 December 2013 02:47 (ten years ago) link

think it was loosely compared to Gonzalez's Solo Piano 1 somewhere on here.

Evan, Sunday, 25 May 2014 05:06 (nine years ago) link

the female vocalist (the one in the risque pose above) was at the st. louis show too. the rest of the band was some untrained female musicians who were kind of trying to figure it all out as they plucked and thrashed along, like an early slits. i loved it.

nurse with attitude (get bent), Sunday, 25 May 2014 05:13 (nine years ago) link

it was an interesting f.u. to the image of jandek as a Very Serious Musician in spite of his lack of conventional technical skill, and an f.u. to the expectation of all these Very Serious (and overwhelmingly male) avant luminaries he's had backing him up. the last words of the show, spoken by the woman vocalist, were "you've been had."

Really cool, though get bent I don't really see how this is more subverting Jandek's image than the original post in this thread? This all feels way more Jandek than a pro funk band

dollar rave club (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 25 May 2014 16:18 (nine years ago) link

i think it's VERY jandek, but i also think a lot of people may not see it that way. they're both subversive though.

nurse with attitude (get bent), Sunday, 25 May 2014 18:17 (nine years ago) link

Some friends of mine backed him in mpls. They aren't famous. I think someone shot documentary footage of the rehearsal process, I hope it is released

Semi regular ilxor Chris b. talked to him about hats and tx bbq after the show

dollar rave club (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 25 May 2014 18:28 (nine years ago) link

For me, the biggest subversion came from the presence of the "main" woman (I think her name is Sheila Smith - no relation, I assume/hope.)

I don't think anyone's going to disagree that a huge part of the Jandek canon is thematically obsessed with isolation, disconnection, alienation, etc. So to see a woman who wasn't even born when Blue Corpse was released grinning with delight while Jandek put his guitar neck between her legs (for real) was pretty eye-opening. After 10 years of live shows and 60-odd releases over 36 years, we've seen a hell of a lot from Corwood, but overt on-stage sexual tension was a new one on me.

Beyond flirting/throwing herself at the rep, Sheila commanded the gig on many occasions. She spent WAY more time on the mic than Sterling did overall, and in contrast to the rep's usual demeanor, she actively engaged the audience: making eye contact, having exchanges with specific members of the crowd, getting off stage and wandering around the front row.

One fellow next to me had brought a copy of very early Jandek vinyl, and at one point Sheila noticed it and started berating him to hold it up. He resisted for a long time - he tried hiding it in his arms, with a deer-in-the-headlights stare, but she wouldn't leave him alone until he relented. At another point she got off stage and walked up to a young man who was doing his best to pretend he didn't notice her, keeping his eyes locked on the rep, until she was right next to him, demanding that he pay attention.

So, yeah - a sexually commanding, audience-engaging 20-something woman as the frontperson for "Jandek" was pretty mind-blowing to behold.
