sexualization of youth in pop: C or D?

a spin off (rather obliquely) from the nelly thread where we talk about lil bow wow. in the "take ya home" video, bow wow (who i assume is about 14?) is surrounded by both grown ass women (or grown ass video hoez as the case may be) and also girls his own age (a few of them look even younger.) both sets of women (or girls) are doing the exact same thing: shaking their woman bits (or what little they have of same) and generally being hoochie e/affects. it's clear from the videos construction that we're supposed to look at them the same way, as objects of lust, despite the fact that most of these girls aren't old enough to shave. bow wow himself - in his way - is a sex object both for the supposed little girls which make up his audience and for the women in the video who are "speaking to him" (they want to "take him home", i'm guessing not for a few quick games of super smash brothers and some pizza rolls.)

pop has always been about the fetishization of youth - in one way or another - since it's modern inception. but (**DEVIL'S ADVOCACY ALERT!) isnt it a bit disingenuous for people to be making money off of sexing up teenage girls and castigating r kelly with the free hand? is it a sign of something when it's okay for a teenage boy like bow wow to be humped all over by women when the same thing is done to britney (or her modern, illegal counterpart) and everyone's pissing their shorts (while creaming them at the same time)?

is it just me or has diddling little girls been a pop preoccupation (maybe not on record) since chuck and jerry lee?

Follow this link: http://www.geocities.com/minipopsmagic/index.html

The 1980s British band and TV show the Minipops. In which drama school youths dress up as oversexed women in their mid 20s and lip synch to Sheena Easton songs.

Can it be about Kelly Osborne for a while

Ronan, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why does everyone think kelly osbourne is attractive? while i'd admit it's nice to see someone on mtv who has a normal female body (as well as the body type i'm generally attracted to), she's got a bulldog face.

jess, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Cos.............................. she's a bitch.

Ronan, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes we all secretly want a 16-year-old who lives with her mum to whip us into shape

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's like you're telling the story of my life tracer.

this thread will be the deciding factor in whether or not ilm can discuss sexuality issues without it turning into a circle jerk.

this is probably completely unrelated but i remember when i was in the states (at the age of 12) i met a few teenagers (around the same age). they seemed much more... sexual. i don't know if that was a *front* or not. i wonder how much society really puts these expectations on kids to grow up more quickly (than in belgium/europe). the media is partly to blame of course. america is far more *interested* (or obsessed you take your pick) than in belgium. its a love hate relationship: the censorship but at the same time it still tries to inject as much sex in a deluded form. (sorry for bad english)

nathalie, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

... and this is probably why us lot (belgians) are so crap at pop 'n' rock. hah!

nathalie, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't know how they do it in belgium, but no one's going to read your posts unless you show a little more skin.

If Britney fans have a 'free hand' they're certainly not going to be castigating R Kelly with it

Sorry, damn that marijuana.

could it be that in america, where we're so entirely afraid of admitting that anyone under the age of 16 might have a sexual component to their lives, that it's finally swinging back the other way? it seems like the need to repress and deny that element in children that makes adults love to turn it around and take it entirely in the other direction (bow wow videos, aaron carter album covers, child beauty pageants). or something.

My favorite thing about Bow Wow is the "from the streets" claim. Apparently he was hustlin' when he was 8.

Classic.

Seconded.

LBW is trying to sell to both genders, I think to an audience slightly younger than he is. For the girls of this age, sex doesn't yet dominate their thinking - so they mimic the girls who bump 'n' grind with him with relative innocence. For the boys he's selling to, sex is everything (and probably nothing) - they know what they want in their ho's, and they want more of it. What bothers me about this isn't the age thing in itself, it's that same old objectification. The age only compounds this existing problem; the younger you are, the more vulnerable you are to dumb ideas about sexuality; and judging by the number of magazines for older guys with Britney covers, you might never get over these dumb ideas. But how do you teach boys (men) that girls (women) are not just a set of measurements, that sexual relations even in youth can be far more complex and wonderful than their conception allows? Short of forcing them to listen to the Moldy Peaches, I don't know.

isnt it a bit disingenuous for people to be making money off of sexing up teenage girls and castigating r kelly with the free hand?

At first I misread "castigating" as "castrating", which would've been fine with me for purely musical reasons. It'd save him a bundle on children's choirs.

B-Rad, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

everyone's pissing their shorts (while creaming them at the same time)

I can't help feeling the Moldy Peaches would approve of this
