Remember the wave of feisty female-fronted ensembles who were breaking stereotypes and confounding expectations with invigorating freshness and illustrious futures? No? Well how about the wave of female-fronted etc that came after that? No? The one after that? And the one after that?

Wait wait wait.... The Waitresses originated that Motels/Romeo Void sound. And I'd rather debate the Waitresses -v- Missing Persons.

I love that phrase "my dog could've played that" and perhaps the only song that actually applies to in real life is the Motels' wonderful "Shame". Actually, it's what my ten-year-old-at-the-time cousin said when it came on the radio. "I don't know much about music but MY DOG COULD PLAY THAT SONG." Then again if I heard it now all the little subtle complicated bits that don't quite get onto AM radio would interfere with my enjoyment and I wouldn't like it as much.

Oh come on, there was a Waitresses thing not too long ago. And the only Missing Persons album I am at all familiar with is 'Color in Your Life'

Funny... I just broke out "A Girl In Trouble is a Temporary Thing" a few days ago (got the 12" vinyl at home). Love that track.

Martha & the Muffins vs. Rough Trade!

I think the Motels preceded the Waitresses by a decade and a half. But I can't stand either of them. Take the f out of fuck and it's uck. Romeo Void were OK but they just seemed like a drearier version of Pylon. I liked Deborah (pronounced "duh-BORE-uh" and don't you forget it) Iyall, though. Something in your eyes says buy me some fries.

Martha and the Muffins v. Rough Trade ain't fair Arthur, and you know it. Even though M+M has more members, Carole Pope could kick the crap out of the entire band herself, with one hand tied behind her back. Musically speaking, I dunno, it's probably a draw because they've both got a lot of nuggets of Canadian New Wavey goodness. As for the question at hand, I'm going to say The Waitresses, too. Dammit man, the "Square Peg" theme song is more memorable than anything else the other two did, though Romeo Void is the better of the two. And what about Berlin?

Sean Carruthers, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martha Ladly was in the Associates but Carole Pope was Dusty Springfield's girlfriend for awhile. I just can't choose. You're right about "Square Pegs", though, Sean, I forgot.

Berlin are classic for "Sex (I'm A)", and "The Metro" is cool, too. But I hate that stupid Top Gun song.

Arthur, Wednesday, 19 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't point out the fact about the Motels being older just so Arthur could do it.

"Are these motherfuckers what all the people are screaming about? My DOG plays drums better than that kid with the big nose." - Sonny Liston on the Beatles.

one year passes...
Reviving only because this showed up on eBay. Iyall has the requisite web site up too.

The Motels are still better though.

Ugh, the Motels were awful. Romeo Void were only slightly better due to penning "Never Say Never," but even that's not the foundation for a career.

I'll take Altered Images, please.

take the L out of lover and it's uvver

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 1 December 2003 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Come on. "Total Control," people!

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 1 December 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked "Take the L out of 'lover' and it's 'over,'" still do, and like it better than "Never Say Never."

Pete Scholtes, Monday, 1 December 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the reunited romeo void ought to cover fannypack's "cameltoe."

Eisbär (llamasfur), Monday, 1 December 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Motels win for "So L.A." and "Suddenly Last Summer" too.
