'business' is cartoon-beat chase scene batman & robin like all the early singles but this time he's actually talking about batman and robin!! (a running theme of the entire record for some wonderful reason)
-ethan in the infamous pitchfork review

so, what is the wonderful reason?

i can only think of
*em as the robin to dre's batman (mentor/protege thingy)
*the multiple identities thing. if eminem = bruce wayne/slim shady=batman, then marshall mathers = adam west?
is there more to it than that? why the layered id? why doesn't 'business' get mentioned more (i really like it)?
discuss!

There's also the blatant homoeroticism.

Does that make Everlast The Riddler?

Maybe he's remembering Esham's whole Batman thing, from his Detroit days...

and he looks damn good in that superhero cod-piece.

Tim Burton once said that what he found so intriguing about Batman was that, unlike other superheroes, Batman is pretty much as crazy and disturbed as any of the "villains" he's fighting. I mean, the guy dresses up like a BAT for Chrissake. It's one thing to get bitten by a radioactive spider and another thing to actually dress up in this bizarre costume and go out and beat up muggers every night.

So the association of Eminem and Batman seems like a good one: both are putting on masks, trying to put a scare into people they don't like. And both have six letters in their name.

But does that mean Mr. Mathers hangs around in his mansion with only a Sweet Young (Male) Thing and an Old English Butler, and nothing else?

Wait...Eminem = Batman or Eminem = Robin? Mathers himself seems to be settling for the latter , meaning he'll either grow up to become Nightwing, get shot by the Joker, or get his own monthly series (yes, I am a comics geek).

I'm going to go with the homoerotic element of it all. Robin and Bruce Wayne are typically joked about as a couple (just as Bert and Ernie are). So, given all the controversy The Great White Hype served concerning homophobia, he just wants to screw around with people more by putting himself in the role of the boyish sigfried to Batman (Dre's) Roy. There are also jokes on the new album about Em and Dre going at it and everything...it's just his way of trying to make himself "the worst thing since Elvis Presley" I guess. He's ultimately a dumbass: a more resepcted and melodic version of (insert name of character-less singer of dreadful nu-metal band here).

Just like in The Bell Jar – Esther writing a novel (obviously aubiographical, at least on an emotional level) and decides she will make her character's name have six letters, just like Esther. Esther=the six-lettered Sylvia as well. (One of the most uncomfortable moments in a novel for me.) Eminem=the six-lettered Batman, but Dre is nowhere near as boring and irritating as Robin.
