Contra-thread.

What instruments, besides guitar/bass/drum/keyboard do you find can either:
-Do no wrong
-or-
-Have periodic moments of greatness if used correctly...
?

The voice.

I find that a cello can do no wrong.

Oboe, as in "Bye Bye Pride" - Go Betweens- can have a moment of greatness...
And the Melodica (ref: Gang of Four "5:45", Joe Jackson "Fools in Love"?is that what I'm thinking of?) can also do no wrong, unless it's in the hands of a total incompetent....

Wurlitzer and Rhodes organs. Always money.

I love a good cello now and again. Also, I can stand accordion more than most, as I can pump organ, classic Fender Rhodes, xylophone and marimba. I think I just outlined my dream band too, maybe with a couple of flutes and a bad acoustic guitar.

Also, calling all Ondes-Martenot fans to thread (you know who you are)!

Accordians, Theramins, Optigan, Xylophones = have periodic moments of greatness if used correctly.

I'm not denying that pianos are sometimes used in the most awful way possible, but for me pianos can also save a song. I like keyboards too, but I'm much more fond of real pianos - there's a richness of sound there that adds so much (blues especially) then again, maybe I just favor it because it's the only instrument I can play well

bass clarinet has never done me wrong. hammond organs are also potentially great.

the theremin in the hands of jon spencer = classic
the theremin in the hands of jimmy page = super colossal dud

also I dig the sounds of: harmonium, tabla, sarod, tanpura, 'synthaxe drumitar', tabla machines, playskool drum machines, arc welders, Stradivarius violas (no violins - violins suXor), air compressors, and my in-house invention the 'deconstructionist noise sitar'. also soldering irons (more specifically the sound made when you burn yr hand by mistake)

Although overdone in recent years there's something wonderful about a Fender Rhodes. I also love oboe, french horn, harpsichord, flute, and strings.

The recorder = indiest instrument evah.

And, as stated before on ILM, flutes in hip-hop = ratings.
