I can't remember the name of the band. It was a late eighties, early nineties band that played electronics. I remember white dudes with dreads and lazers and synths. It had kind of a Hawkwind or Legendary Pink Dots feel , but it was just two dudes, I think. They were from England and somewhat famous. I'm hurting my brain trying to remember the name or find something to google. Maybe something about Octopuses.

I would be willing to bet that they smelled bad.

thank you. it was really bothering me to not pull the name out.

I imagine that Hawkwind smelt bad (Lemmy era, though not because of Lemmy)

Poison
Probably smelled like hairspray and semen.

Everybody Smells it could be a childrens' book. I think both Stevie Nicks and Joan Jett played my town tonight, they must have gotten all hot and sweaty. Especially Joan, because she had to play the horse track outdoors in the humidity.

I stayed home and watched sports, but I bet those ladies were ripe.

During a Lollapalooza stop, my friend Tim ran into Nick Cave at a Wendy's salad bar (back when Wendy's had a salad bar). After a short how-do-you-do, Cave revealed that L7 was really one of the smelliest collectives of people he'd ever encountered.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 May 2009 09:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Lynyrd Skynyrd and Badfinger don't smell too well by now.

how did the conversation take that particular direction?

macaulay culkin's bukkake shocker (bug), Sunday, 3 May 2009 10:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Tim asked him about all the other bands on the tour, and Cave immediately went into L7 first with a rant on how gross they were.

Deftones looks like a group of clean young men who've just been out shopping for clothes together.

Amebix lived in a squat with no running water and invented a musical genre called "crust". I figure they probably didn't smell too good.

No, sadly. That would have been quite excellent if she was, though. She was certainly with the band, though, if ya smell what I'm cookin'.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but I once interviewed Blind Melon on their tour bus, and it smelled of feet worse than any place I've ever smelled. Like someone piped in the stink Vegas-casino-style. I coughed for like half an hour after I finally escaped into the sweet fresh air.

I think crusty bands would win this- first, think about the worldview/hygiene habits implicit in crusty band names: Nausea, AusRotten, Infest, Amebix, Assuck, Excrement of War . . . need I go on?

Then, if you notice that crusty clothes, i.e. the crust vests and jackets are covered in 1000s of British "cone spikes" (ala Charged GBH, Kaaos, etc.) they basically can't be washed ever, because you can't put something that weighs 25 pounds and is mostly metal into a washing machine.

But. . . they tend to sew their patches onto clothes with dental floss, so perhaps their oral hygiene isn't so bad.

Again, people -- G.G. Allin wins this. To not concede this point is to do the great man a disservice.

Alex in NYC, Sunday, 3 May 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Gwar, esp. on a summer tour - that laytex body armor. I'll bet there is a lot of festering going on under there. Unless everyone in the band showers immediately after every show but, cmon, its Gwar.

Shouldn't this be a band that was really popular before the widespread availability of air conditioning?

Maybe Benny Goodman's big bands?

I wouldn't be surprised if these scatological band name members end up being really anal-retentive super-clean types, but I have no idea.

What club or venue owner in their right mind would book them?

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 3 May 2009 19:54 (fifteen years ago) link

They packed in 200 people on a week night in Portland. And their show and music was great.

The point of my article on them was that one of the guitar players got a cut on his hand and ended up with a serious infection on that tour. He had to be hospitalized.

I don't know if I can post the article on here now that Metal Edge is over? It's short...

Good point. I think Aretha refuses to perform with air-conditioning. For her Vegas a shows a couple years back she allowed it in the audience but not on stage. But I still imagine she smells nice.
