Never Stop

ORchid ONe, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Live version of "Do It Clean" off the blue e.p. (recorded live at the Royal Albert Hall, starting with the repeated tape intonation, "You Can't Just Shoot a Man in the back! You Can't Just Shoot a Man in the back! You Can't Just Shoot a Man in the back! ...." Righteous.

Alex in NYC, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Ocean Rain" or "Gods Will Be Gods." Answers subject to change.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Thorn of Crowns"

Motel Hell, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wow, all my fave bands from the 80s are now fecal freaks. How strange! But seriously: "Never Stop" is, indeed, the one.

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"The Cutter."

John Darnielle, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with John.

Arthur, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i used to like their 1st 2 albums & everything else on singles etc from up-t-&-including...but i got 'crocodiles' (album) again recently (50c in a op shop) & found it unlistenably bad.

unknown or illegal user, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

("up-to-&-including")

unknown or illegal user, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

but i guess my pick-only-one pick would still be the 1st song off that album

unknown or illegal user, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's cool cause it starts just like 'planet claire' by the B52s

unknown or illegal user, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Color me boring, but I'm going with "Killing Moon" - I just got done watching Donnie Darko again (Jason Schwartzman - how could you?!!!)

J Blount, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

J, excellent choice. It's a perfect song, so it being obvious doesn't matter. Every movie should have songs by Echo and the Bunnymen, The Smiths, and all the great "post punk" bands of the 80s. Didn't "Head Over Heals" (Tears for Fears) play over one scene (in Donnie Darko)... I think Jenna Malone was walking down a hallway in slow-mo? Perfect celluloid moment.

Tim DiGravina, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not only does "Head Over Heels" get prominent placement, but there's also a remake of a Tears For Fears tune.

J Blount, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Over the Wall.

Plus there was Sparkle Motion's dance routine to Notorious.

Andy K, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A Promise

MICHELINE, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

villiers terrace.

cecilia, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I loves the throbbing shimmer of "Bring on the Dancing Horses." Pale Saints do the same thing on "Sight of You."

Spencer Chow, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard that live version of "Do It Clean" mentioned above, but the studio version's fine with me. So, um..."Do It Clean."

paul, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the cutter, the most recognizably echo song ever.

keith, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Bring on the Dancing Hoses" or "Killing Moon", flip a coin.

Norman Phay, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Bring on the Dancing Horses" -- I like them in John-Hughes-Film mode.

Mark, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Is "My Kingdom" their most underrated song ever? That's my pick. Starts gently, has a killer chorus, ends with a guitar freakout. _Ocean Rain_ is the album I always come back to - earlier stuff is good, but hasn't aged as well.

Ernest, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"seven seas"

gygax! (i forgot my blog password), Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Lips Like Sugar", because it's an absolutely gorgeous song and the only one off that album I can remember.

Dan Perry, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Do It Clean, you know what I mean.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 19 January 2003 23:31 (twenty-three years ago)

A Nairn (moretap), Monday, 20 January 2003 04:21 (twenty-three years ago)

"Seven Seas", no doubt.

Charlie (Charlie), Monday, 20 January 2003 04:49 (twenty-three years ago)

How about now?

The new Sean M. Hall (Piano Man), Monday, 20 January 2003 05:04 (twenty-three years ago)

I agree with Alex on the live Do it Clean -- that's the last song i put on my first party tape (i.e. mix tape) way back in 1987. "Thank you, Goodnight, I'm tired"

christoff (christoff), Monday, 20 January 2003 21:46 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Revive!

"Seven Seas" is mine!

I cannot stop playing this Songs to Learn and Sing thing lately. I'm going through some kind of regressive phase lately. But my estimation of this band has never been higher that it is right now. I'm gonna half to plunk down for the damn box set, I just know it...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 17 March 2003 07:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Yes, you must.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 March 2003 07:02 (twenty-three years ago)

Seriously, though Ned, is it really good? Is there stuff on there I'll probably want beyond just trying to find the original vinyl in some used shop somewhere?

Anyway, I'm TOTALLY addicted to these guys right now...

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 17 March 2003 07:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I lurv many of those B-sides and live cuts and all that...it's just me, but I say go for it, it's quite something.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

spare us the cutter!

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 07:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Myonga Vön Bontee, Monday, 26 March 2007 13:16 (nineteen years ago)

It used to be The Killing Moon, but now it's The Cutter.

Killing Moon, All Night Version - more for everyone to enjoy

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 26 March 2007 15:57 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. That one.

Mark G, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

The Back of Love. Still thrills me now. Was the 2nd single I ever bought (from Woollies in Wrexham). I always pretend it was the first. (I'll still stand by my Tight Fit purchase though)

Toucan3000, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:43 (nineteen years ago)

"Villiers Terrace"

i love that live version on that ep/single thing where they did all we need is love. i used to listen to that over and over when i was a kid. i guess never stop is my top fave too though. it was the song that made me a fan. that blue american ep with that on it killed me so hard. my fave one-two punch would have to be the bedbugs/over your shoulder genius on the b-side to the dancing horses single. as good as anything they ever did and way better than anything that came after. and way better than dancing horses too. shame they had to ruin bedbugs later. oh well.

scott seward, Monday, 26 March 2007 16:52 (nineteen years ago)

Bring On The Dancing Horses (shimmering buzz guitar-as praised above), or Over The Wall (Will Seargant's chiming/growling guitar simplicity) for me.

Mr.Gripper, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:21 (nineteen years ago)

PUPPET

nabisco, Monday, 26 March 2007 17:27 (nineteen years ago)

Or wait, actually I choose that BBC live thing where Ian's voice goes out on him and he sings "SPEEAarrgha US THE CUTT-AH."

nabisco, Monday, 26 March 2007 18:34 (nineteen years ago)

"Do It Clean."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 26 March 2007 18:35 (nineteen years ago)

eleven years pass...

the title track of heaven up here is such a beautiful anxious glorious mess, cramming a dozen songs into three-ish minutes

reggie (qualmsley), Saturday, 27 October 2018 21:40 (seven years ago)

Do It Clean has appeared in my Daily Mix 1 every day for a year it seems, so I’m going with the algorithmic pick, and sticking with Do it Clean (you know what I mean?).

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 27 October 2018 21:54 (seven years ago)

Is "My Kingdom" their most underrated song ever? That's my pick. Starts gently, has a killer chorus, ends with a guitar freakout.

― Ernest, Saturday, June 22, 2002 5:00 PM (sixteen years ago)

Yep. What about the hard-to-decipher lyrics of the outro:

"You're a bitter malignous person
And your death is well overdue
You suck the blood that kills you
You kiss the hand that hates you
Your sucking bitter pain"

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Sunday, 28 October 2018 05:53 (seven years ago)
