Best Prince (non-album) B-side

There was a Prince B-side poll before, but it only included the tunes that appeared on the B-sides disc of his greatest hits comp, so I thought we could poll all of his non-album B-Sides. The list is in chronological order.

I didn't include "2 Whom It May Concern" and "Kirk J's B Sides Remix", as they are both medleys/megamixes and not really new songs.

Evil poll.

"Erotic City"

neu hollywood (Eric H.), Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:22 (seventeen years ago)

For me it's a tough choice between "Shockadelica", "Horny Pony", and "When Will We B Paid".

Tuomas, Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

Oh yeah, and did I mention that a box set of Prince 12" versions is long overdue? The only B-sides compilation he's released has only 7" versions of the songs, but the 12" version is almost always better.

Tuomas, Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:33 (seventeen years ago)

The James Brown groove on "La, La, La, He, He, Hee" simply doesn't work if it lasts only three and a half minutes.

Tuomas, Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:34 (seventeen years ago)

just to point out that there doesn't have to be a poll for absolutely everything

it will totally be OK & no one will suffer if it turns out we did not poll absolutely fucking everything

just so you know

worm? lol (J0hn D.), Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:44 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I'm sure this poll is more important than the one about whether odd or even years produce better music. Also, it would be nice if it encourages people to talk more about Prince B-sides. For example, why was a great tune like "Horny Pony" left off Diamonds & Pearls, while crappy tunes like "Insatiable" and "Live 4 Love" were included?

Tuomas, Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:49 (seventeen years ago)

And why are the Batman B-sides better than half of the album?

Tuomas, Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I'm sure this poll is more important than the one about whether odd or even years produce better music.

no, those ones are dumb too

worm? lol (J0hn D.), Sunday, 10 May 2009 20:58 (seventeen years ago)

I think there's an option called "hide all polls" in the preferences, you should try that.

Tuomas, Sunday, 10 May 2009 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

Tuomas i know your poll has more options but you do realize the results for your thread will be almost exactly like this one, right -- best Prince song from "The B-Sides"

j0hn stop being such a fucking baby about polls

Briney Deep Coralgarden (some dude), Sunday, 10 May 2009 21:42 (seventeen years ago)

somebody's gotta point out that you pollriders are mega-lame and if the job falls to me I don't want anybody saying I let down the side

history will vindicate me on the v. important question of the polls

worm? lol (J0hn D.), Sunday, 10 May 2009 21:49 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I guess "Erotic City" will win this one too... It's a great song, but I don't really see why it won with such a big marginal. To me "Shockadelica" does pretty much the same thing but even better. And there are some real gems among the post-1989 B-sides, but they suffer from never been released anywhere except on the original single.

(x-post)

Tuomas, Sunday, 10 May 2009 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

I know it's trite to say but this would be a solid body of work alone. And yeah, La, La, La, He, He, Hee needs to go on forever. I really don't know what to vote. She's Always In My Hair, maybe, tres cute.

i'm trying to go through the 6cd 12" archive thing and attach the proper artwork to the proper tracks but jeez this is taking me ages to find the right tracks. i'm using discogs but is there a better resource for Prince singles w/ artwork than discogs?

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 11 May 2009 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

all of his non-album B-Sides

Nope. No "Gotta Stop (Messin' About)," no credibilty.

xhuxk, Monday, 11 May 2009 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

"Get Some Solo," clearly

Matos W.K., Monday, 11 May 2009 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

j/k

Matos W.K., Monday, 11 May 2009 00:30 (seventeen years ago)

btw, with his actual greatest non-LP b-side inexplicably missing, i'm going with "horny toad." prince clearly should have done more rockabilly songs. (though i guess "delirious" sort of counts.)

Housequake.com used to be the best resource for this, but because of Prince's ridiculous legal threats against fansites that use any copyrighted material (including cover pics), it's been closed down. Prince's Wikipedia discography is actually pretty good, there's a separate page for each single, and most of them have the cover pic as well:

I cannot express how tempted I am to start a poll asking which is J0hn's best diss on ILX polls.

"Gotta Stop (Messin' About)" is not a B-side, it was originally the A-side of a non-album single that was released in 1981 between Dirty Mind and Controversy. It was later rereleased as the B-side of "Let's Work", and it also appeared on the B-Sides compilation, but since it originally was an A-side, I didn't include it here.

Capitaine Jay Vee, Monday, 11 May 2009 15:58 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the discog recommendation Tuomas. The issue I was having with discogs.com was the seperation of singles into Prince, Prince and the Revolution, Prince and The New Power Generation etc. I finally finished adding artwork to each track late last night.

brotherlovesdub, Monday, 11 May 2009 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

"Gotta Stop (Messin' About)" is not a B-side...It was later rereleased as the B-side of "Let's Work"

In other words, it's a B-side. And non-LP. (And in the U.S., I'm pretty sure it was only a non-LP B-side -- not "rereleased," since it had never been released here as an A in the first place.)

xhuxk, Monday, 11 May 2009 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

Well okay, I guess it depends on what your definition of a "B-side" is. Many Prince A-sides were later released as a B-side for some other single, but I wanted this poll to be about B-sides that never came out in any in other form except as a B-side.

Tuomas, Monday, 11 May 2009 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, if someone wants to give a vote for "Gotta Stop", give a shoutout in this thread.

Erotic City is not my fave on this list at all, really, but I want always to share this arguably clever ploy employed by Boise's strip club Erotic City.

test drives at ur own risk i cant go with you too many bees (Abbott), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

A shorter summary from the LA Times:

A strip club in Boise, Idaho, has found an artful way to prance past a city ordinance that restricts full nudity.

On what it calls Art Club Nights, the Erotic City strip club charges $15 for a sketch pad, pencil and a chance to see completely naked female dancers.

The Boise City Council passed an ordinance banning total nudity in public unless it had "serious artistic merit" -- an exemption meant to apply to plays, dance performances and art classes. So far no police citations have been issued at the club, owner Chris Teague said.

Was the vote for "TC's Rap" a joke?

Tuomas, Thursday, 14 May 2009 06:54 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

A tip for those of you who, like me, are hunting down Prince singles for the various non-album B-sides and 12 inch mixes: it's often worth looking them up at Amazon.de, over there you can find many Prince rarities cheaper than on the UK or US Amazon. I just ordered a copy of the "New Power Generation" CD maxi for 55 cents!

Also, some Prince singles seem to have been only been released in Germany. For example, I found a German "Erotic City/I Would Die For U" CD single which has the long 12" mixes of both of those tunes - previously I didn't even know such a single existed. As far as I know this is the only place where you can get the 12" versions of those tunes on CD. The B-Sides comp and the Girl 6 soundtrack only have the 7" version of "Erotic City", and I don't think the 12" mix of "I Would Die for U" (which is awesome, btw) has ever been released on any comp.
