Aw, fuck it

Surely everyone has had the experience of working on something, and then either being frustrated with it, or facing a deadline, and saying, 'aw, fuck it,' and 'finishing' the work - turning it in, slapping on an ending, whatever.

Often criticism of bad records, or not-as-good records, seems to say that the musicians were just not talented enough, as if whether or not a musician makes a good record is solely a matter of their primordial TALENT. But how much of a role might 'aw, fuck it' play? And how are 'aw, fuck it' and a musician's 'real' (in some sense) talent (taking into account how easily they give in without taking more time to work on a song, etc.) related?

I'm thinking that this might work very differently in songwriting, lyric writing, practicing, recording, producing, etc.

Besides the other differences, one might be economic: most musicians are much more constrained in studio time than, say, songwriting time, though if a musician is making some kind of living off of their music then they can't dilly-dally forever, or pull a K. Shields. I don't think this is totally an economics thing though.

My ILX compilation song was a big one

"Yuri's brother is not lending me his cavaquinho? Aw, fuck it. I just put some vocals and other shit in the song"

This question is making my brain hurt.

First 'aw, fuck it' moment that comes to mind is the inexplicablly sped-up ending of Black Sabbath's "War Pigs".

That ending's awesome!

And this certainly the wrong place for it, but has the deadline passed for the ILM comp?

You do jump from doing a half-assed job to no talent. S/he wasn't disciplined (and maybe neglected his/her talent), right? In my opinion it shouldn't matter at all. Amount of energy wasted is irrelevant. Then again I wonder how that question would relate to the Lo Fi genre. Maybe it does matter.

I think the Lofi genre is all about saying "aw, fuck it" because sometimes in the end just as good if not better music can come from less effort than more. The talented lofi musician can put in very little effort and sort of let the music make itself and collect a bunch of good unexpected things along the way.

But how much is that just a pose? (INTENTION heheh)

Speaking only for myself - "aw fuck it" is usually balanced by "So steeped we are in blood that to turn back would be the same as going o'er" or whatever the quote is, so it works out fine.
