'Of course, there's going to be filler on any double album'

Oh, is that so?

Prove it to me by listing the tracks that are filler on The Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs (more than a double album, so it should have more filler, eh?).

If people disagree, then are the songs filler or not? It seems like 'filler' should be pretty well agreed upon as being filler if it's really going to be. (Otherwise this common critical trope would mean something very different from what it's usually used for - something like 'this album has some songs you'll like and some you won't but which ones you'll like really is sort of like your taste or not, man'.)

If you like, argue that filler is integral to the sprawling nature of a double album, etc. so it's not really filler or filler serves a different purpose than you think it does (cf related use, 'filler' on e.g. pop albums that OBVIOUSLY can't be filled up with good songs because the musicians are talentless hacks or the industry is fleecing us).

The reason I said just 69 Love Songs is that I didn't want to overrun this thread with blah blah blah I like Glass Onion blah blah blah I like Eric's Trip etc. Start other threads on other double albums asking a similar question, though, I'd be interested in seeing them.

Daydream nation is a double album?

Marc, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(I felt 69 Lovesongs was a work in progress, a demo. So basically most of it seemed filler to me.)

nathalie, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

well, it was, or so I am told

Josh, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha I meant DN not 69LS

nath in taking-the-other-option shockah! maybe your answer goes on the 'fuck it' thread ;)

Josh, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is there such a thing as album-and-a-half?

Josh, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That'd be a record + EP, no? If so, yes, it has been done: Dead Man Ray. The EP was total crap (and this is coming from someone who contemplated having a DMR tattoo).

Wowee Zowee - - three sides of vinyl.

Mark, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

A full CD + a mini-CD that feels like it could be an album, e.g. (I'm ashamed to mention) the American version of Mwng.

ciaran, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Wouldn't filler be the perfect description of the genre pisstake cuts on 69LS (e.g. "Love Is Like Jazz", "Experimental Music Love")? Funny once, but when you get to love an album and play it over and over, annoying to have to skip over?

B-Rad, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Not sure if any of 69 Love Songs is filler, but I'd listen to 699 songs of filler to get to absolute genius nuggets like "Papa Was a Rodeo" and "Yeah! Oh, Yeah!" -- my all-time favorite Merritt songs. I sense a POO! coming out of this (boy does it not feel right typing that last part).

Low's Things We Lost In The Fire had music on 3 sides of vinyl and the lyrics inscribed on the forth.

And it has that track before "In Metal" which is a pointless noise and therefore filler, so this answer is slightly relevant.

I think Raashan Roland Kirk did it first: http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Addtvadzkv8wn

Joe Jackson's Big World had only three sides, too, which caused at least one reviewer I know of to remark "The vinyl shortage must be over".

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And yes, Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation was a 2-LP set.

Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't think Blonde On Blonde has any filler...except for "Rainy Day Women."

Justyn Dillingham, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

At least two verses of "Sad Eyed Lady" are filler.

B-Rad, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

that wasn't from a double LP though. it wasn't even a single LP. lazy dunedin-ites

hamish, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You know, not everything in this world revolves around the Kilgours, though we all wish that were true.

B-Rad, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i only just got what hamish was talking about

unknown or illegal user, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hamish its a bob dylan song! or was that a joke?

unknown or illegal user, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Husker Du's 'Zen Arcade' is a masterpiece largely because its double LP length makes room for a lot of fascinating experimental bits. I suppose it's the same with the White Album.

Keith McD, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK wheres the filler on the hampton grease band album? there isnt any.

unknown or illegal user, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

OK where's the filler on KISS ALIVE? A: between the stage announcements & exhortations to drink tequila.

unknown or illegal user, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

bob who? never heard of him. was he any early chills drummer?

hamish, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is there such a thing as album-and-a-half?

I have a White Flag LP that has double-grooving on one side so it's a different record depending on which groove the needle falls into. I'm sure there are other records like this.

Damn good album, too, as I recall. THIRD STRIKE, I think it was.

Matt Riedl (veal), Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There is no filler on Trout Mask Replica. Or perhaps I should say, the filler is indispensable.

o. nate, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

is now the right time to say that altho' sign o the times has 2 filler tracks on it (slow love, hot thing) that's only as many ( 1 in 9 ) as an average single. therefore, on a double that makes it as good as *two* singles - only they came out at once!! on the same f*cking day !! to say nothing about the fact that he'd put out at least 20 songs per year for the prtevious 10 years!! and he was doing the best tours in the world too !!! *AND* producing/writing number one smashes for all sorts of others...

phew.

wasn't he amazing at the peak ?
