gareth, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i heard something called 'alain delon' which i liked. wistful. this is good. but, audiogalaxy, so can't be too sure...

gareth, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Someone mentioned him on the peng! list once, and said he thought Sound-Dust reminded him of de Roubaix's music. IIRC, de Roubaix has done a lot of soundtrack work in France, especially movies with ocean/water-related themes (Jacques Cousteau films, that sort of thing).

Wow - I was going to ask if anyone's heard of him, because I pulled this one pastiche-y track off Napster eons ago and loved it - it jumped from one style to another to another, I think it had some Baroque thrown in with spaghetti western or something. I just got a "volume 2" of his stuff from Dustygroove, and will probably get volume 1 sometime soon. Most of it wasn't as good as the thing I got off Napster (which I've since lost), but it's still pretty good. There's a lot of variety: swinging 60s/70s, classical influences, that "wistful" stuff, plus some more whimsical things. The CD is good enough, though, that I want to hear more. If you're into sixties and seventies soundtracks you should definitely check him out.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 20:56 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually, this one (from the Dustygroove catalog) is supposed to be good, but I don't have it yet. It's from 1968-70, though, which is a great period for soundtracks. I should probably snap it up before it sells out.

Francois De Roubaix -- Dernier Domicile Connu/Le Rapace . . . CD . . . $14.99 (Item: 62210)

Beautiful -- and some of the best soundtrack work ever recorded by this mad French genius! Francois De Roubaix is one of our favorite soundtrack composers ever -- and if you've never heard his work, this is a great place to start. The 3 films included in the package all feature amazing music that's unlike anything else you might have heard before -- a blend of funky rhythms, soaring strings, floating flute, and odd little instrumental touches that evoke a lot of weird moods and mystery moments.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 21:00 (twenty-three years ago)

wow, thanks kerry! think i'll revive the other threads of mine that had no responses! off to dustygroove.com right now!

Yes! "Journal de bord" - that was the track that I used to have on my hard drive. I wonder which CD it is on.

Kerry (dymaxia), Tuesday, 3 December 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Les Amis is great

the track i referred to above (mistakenly called alain delon), the 2nd half of this appears to be Enterrement Sous-Main, i'm assuming the first part to be something else from Les Aventuriers, but it appears not to be the main theme

i like the borsalino-esque nature of some of the saloon bar piano stuff, like Benedicte too

revive-i'm listening to the carl craig remix of la mer est grande which was free with the most recent jockey slut
so first of all, anyone who likes francois de roubaix might want to check out this mix,its really good (although i haven't heard the original)
i gather a few other dance producers remixed either this track or one of the others for an ep recently
the only other thing i have heard is a track off a cd-r giveway by gareth ages ago, which i also really liked,so i'm going to start downloading some other stuff...

robin (robin), Monday, 7 July 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i made this compilation cdr, which you can have a copy if you like robin

gareth (gareth), Monday, 7 July 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd love a copy gareth
did you buy all those albums since starting this thread?
anyway,i'm having trouble logging into hotmail at the moment but i'll email you later or tomorrow...
i got a cd-writer recently,so you're on my list of people who've given me cds in that past that i wanted going to return the favour to anyway,so i'll have even more reason to get around to it now!

robin (robin), Monday, 7 July 2003 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

no i didnt buy any of them, they are very difficult to find! someone sent me a cdr with some tracks on, and then i hunted down the rest on p2p things

robin i have finally burned the cd, apologies for the delay.

i wasnt so impressed with the carl craig remix (which ive finally heard), though the original isnt one of my favourite roubaix tracks either so...

i heard a bunch of remixed of domicile dernier connu, and they all made me laugh because they were so rubbish, ditto luke vibert doing piti piti pas. dear oh dear, they should have all left alone!

The new Roubaix compilation "Le Monde Electronique" is looking to be my compilation of the year. Truly incredible mix of melody, drama, and experimentation.

Anyone have a decent discography for him?

what they all said

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 16 September 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, he is brilliant. My favorite film composer. If you like the instrumental bits of early Air and the first Sebastian Tellier album, you need to seek Francois out NOW.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 16 September 2004 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

"Dernier domicile connu" is like a really dramatic late 90s hip hop track!!!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 16 September 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Dusty Groove usually has "Le Monde Electronique..." and "L'homme Orchestre" in stock. I recently purchased both - my first de Roubaix CDs - and I couldn't be happier. The guy's now, like, a hero or something to me.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

It is pretty sad he died so young, in a boating accident. Le Monde Electronique is incredible, I must have zoned out on each track for a day, for about two weeeks. He was a brilliant arranger, creating odd electronic/moog/krautrock atmospheres. The amazing thing is that he didn't usually rely on the atmosphere to get by, he happened to be a deep well of melodic ideas.

Dusty Groove sometimes has the Roubaix Anthologie in stock if you are lucky.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

is that an excerpt from la scoumoune i hear on the new "why grow up?" renault tv ads?

Academy in Brooklyn has two LP's called (pardon my poor 2nd hand French) "Les Plus Belles Musiques De Francois De Roubaix". Caught a glimpse of them through the store window when they were closed. Anyone know if these are any good? I've already got - and love to death - Anthologies 1 & 2, Le Monde Electronique and the Boulevard De Rhum/Dernier Domicile Connu sndtrks.

Three volumes of "Les Plus Belles...." were released shortly after his death, working chronically through his discography.

check here for overlaps with what you already have:
vol. 1: http://deroubaix.free.fr/FDRvol1.html
vol. 2: http://deroubaix.free.fr/FDRvol2.html
vol. 3: http://deroubaix.free.fr/FDRvol3.html

If they're expensive at the Academy, I bought them fairly cheap through the french eBay site...
