"I didn't know Willie Dixon from Adam's house cat," Taylor recalled in an interview with the Tribune. "But he says to me, 'I love the way you sound' and, 'We got plenty of men out here singing the blues, but the world needs a woman like you with your voice to sing the blues.' ”
Farewell Queen of the blues.

fuck, i just heard about this.
i'm surprised there's not more action on this thread. is she too known or something??
"voodoo woman" one of my all-time favorite songs. i wore this tape out for awhile, you know the tape, everybody had that tape, it was just called "koko taylor" i think, with a kind of sepia sleeve, and a photo of her wailing on the mic. did she ever only have the one LP?? "big boss man", "i got what it takes", "that's why i'm crying", "be what you wanna be", and on and on.

i think of her as the definition of chicago blues - backing band totally on it, oozing professionalism, tons of little single-note blues runs on the electric guitar, every trick up its sleeve, tight as a nickel, and a front lady who just breaks it down, drama turned up to 100000.

drama's the wrong word - if it's drama, it's drama that has already happened - koko's come to terms with whatever it is, whenever it was, and she's survived that fire to tell about it

Yep. Glad my DC Pacifica public station WPFW played a bunch of her music since her passing.
