How upset do you get...?

...when people say the music you like is rubbish?

How actually upset, I mean - cos we can all act outraged and spend whole days defending our favourites when we're having fun doing it, and I'm sure sometimes it looks like people posting here or elsewhere ARE actually upset, too. But deep down, how upset do you get?

And do you get more upset when someone insults you personally for liking the music you do, or when someone insults the musicians who make the music you like?

Tom, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I don't get upset when someone tells me. But I really hate it when my girlfriend just casually turns off something I have on, which I'm hoping she'll like.

phil, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think it depends on context. When it's relatively clear that the person doing the critiscizing has no idea of what they're talking about, I tend to get pretty steamed.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I do an EVIL LAUGH. sping my head around three times, vomit green goo and then say "BUT YOURS IS WORSE MATE!"

Seriously.. yeah I do actually.

Or no, I rarely get that comment. They usually say "Oh wow, you're a girl and like music." (?!?) or "You know a lot about music."

nathalie, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

(sping is like spin but much faster)

nathalie, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wish it didn't affect me at all. Like, it's not that important and it doesn't stop me from liking my music. However, I will be honest in saying that I sometimes think: they hate band X and said so to my face = they must hate me. ARRRRGGHHHH! Such self defeating behaviour!

jel --, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

No, I don't think so. Anybody who hates X hates me, too. Ahhhhh ba- doom.

Tracer Hand, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't get upset when people criticize the music i like. after all, if i were to get upset, then how could i ever comment on anything either. theoretically, i would probably be inclined to get more upset about a personal insult, but that doesn't upset me either because i think that usually looks pretty ridiculous, which kind of nullifies anything. plus, if people want to actually insult me, that is fine. strangely, i get more annoyed when people criticise other people (ie. criticizing someone i know)

i enjoy people criticizing the music i like, it is interesting to hear the other side. i like it if they are listening to me as well though. if it becomes more of an insulting *you* type thing i don't get upset but the positive value is gone, it isn't so interesting anymore, (having said that, i have had a little chuckle at some recent *you're probably the sort of person that likes x* type comments - some right, some wrong)

gareth, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Depends who is doing it. Depends how much they know about the artist. Depends how much they're doing out of superficial reasons (see: spite). Depends how much I hold them in esteem. Depends. Like when Ryan Adams gets slagged off it used to smart a bit. It probably still would, but since the heat's died off him recently, we've not heard much from him.

david h(owie), Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it is interesting hearing the other side.

david h(owie), Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I tend to take offense to attacks on the characters of the members of a certain band that I like.

Melissa W, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It makes me cry into my Nekobus pillow...

Tim DiGravina, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Calum to thread!

Melissa- I wonder which band you're talking about?

Julio Desouza, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

That one progressive five-piece outfit, Julio. You know, Journey.

Actually upset? Nope.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hahaha "I like indie" + "I spend time on ILM" = clearly I don't get too bothered?

(PS the above is patently untrue.)

nabisco%%, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"What do you call this music you're listening to?"
"Ambient."
"Well, I don't call it music at all."

This is the last time I got upset about anything anyone's said about my music. It got under my skin pretty badly, but I think it was the mood I was in. Arguments about pop music don't bother me at all.

Keiko, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm usually amused if it's somebody I know/like. Like Ned and his Rufus Rage. I just turn it into a running joke. It tends to bug me more when it's someone online, someone I'll never meet. One exception: roommates who are critical of the music you're listening to are the biggest duds the world has ever known. Also, if suppose if someone were to say, "Oh, you would like that sort of thing", it would really drive me nuts. But no one's done that for years.

Still, I did get really wound up when my friend Jamey started trashing Ru Paul a couple of weeks ago, on typical "loser/failure/hasbeen" terms. I mean, why? Just cause he was only successful for a brief time doesn't make his pop moment any less brilliant. I hate that attitude, it really pissed me off.

Arthur, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to physically attack people who made fun of Prince. Then I turned 12.

Dan Perry, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Prince is just a symbol.

Marc, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

YOU BASTARD I'LL GOUGE YER EYES OUT!!!

an 11-year-old Dan Perry, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There there, Dan, age ain't nuthin' but a number.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eeek! Ned Raggett is a psuedonym for R. KELLY!

Dan Perry, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ned- sean was kind enough to give me a copy of Journey's 'departure' alb. Will give it a spin first when i get back to my LP player in England.

To answer the question: no, I don't. I rather welcome differences in opinion so I can FITE! with them over it.

Julio Desouza, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

INSANELY.

Mr Swygart, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i only listen to music everybody else likes

dyson, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Eeek! Ned Raggett is a psuedonym for R. KELLY!

I believe you can die, I believe I will make you fry.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like a pretty wide variety of bands -- wide enough that at I'm pretty sure every single one of you has something bad to say about an album I've invested a lot of interest and sometimes emotional connections in. This means I usually get irritated by a lot of people on a fairly regular basis and fume about it for a great deal of time. However, it usually depends on context and how music-geeky the offending party is -- if some greasy mullet guy who worships at the altar of the Nuge is all "Them fellas suck because they're a bunch of sissy faggots", it bothers me significantly less than if some high- minded guy with 10,000 records posits that "b-b-but they are the worst mentalists evah => nobody likes them but schmindie rockists!" (Oops, that was probably a bit too specific. Sorry.)

Nate Patrin, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"I believe you can die, I believe I will make you fry." Ned, you're not V/VM, are you?

Tim DiGravina, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

b-b-but they WERE!!

mark s, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Well, if you want me to be, Tim, sure!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Your R. Kelly anti-tribute read like something from V/VM's "Sick Love," Ned. That's where I was going with the V/VM post. :)

Tim DiGravina, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I only get upset when Ned makes fun of bands I like.

But not that much.

Jordan, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can see it now:

Head(cheese) Raggett vs R. Soul Kelly "I believe I can fry (bacon)"

Out now on Yellow and white vinyl

electric sound of jim, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yay me! I try not to upset Jordan, he is a good person.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

unknown or illegal user, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Like Motorhead and the Stooges?

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ha ha

unknown or illegal user, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Um, go read the Northern Soul thread.

Clarke B., Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I used to get upset when *you* said the music I liked was rubbish, Tom, but then I realised that you would end up liking it a year later anyway ;-)

alext, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I find it extremely amusing when people say (behind some else's back) "Oh his taste is crap. Worst taste EVAH!" but then are upset when someone says it to them (or about them). I don't get upset because I know that it is all very relative anyway. Good/bad is irrelevant for me - certainly not someone's opinion of my taste. My enjoyment is not (so much) influenced by someone else's perception of my taste. Of course it is to some degree: I will sometimes buy records based on someone's recommendation.

nath @ woik, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ya know, I'm usually rational and willing to discuss it. But after a couple drinks, at my OWN party, when the nebbishes try to get me to change it, I get really fuckin' pissed off and depressed. That's about the extent of my upset. I want everyone to like what I like, but they've been spoonfed for so long they don't want the huge dollops of sludge I'm pouring off my ladle.

Matt Riedl (veal), Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

My belief is that people only make fools of themselves by disagreeing with me.

Martin Skidmore, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Don’t you think that people can get so offended because musical taste is such a deeply personal thing? It can reflect your personality, character, mood and can even hint at your philosophy, moral code, politics etc. It’s all very well saying that you can remove yourself from the music or it from you, but for many people, this isn’t possible. It becomes an integral part of their lives and having a pop at their taste in music is on some deep psychological level, quite hurtful and provokes a startlingly defensive response.

Rhia, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

EXACTLY.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I was once at an ultra-hip* party. I had just bought a new George Wassouf bootleg at a grocery store on the way to the party. At one point I asked someone who was sitting down listening to some sort of dark sounding indie if I could put it on the stereo. He said, sure. What played was poorly recorded, very bombastic and melodramatic, Syrian music. The guy who had let me put the tape on sat there for a minute, then groaned and left. It was very gratifying, actually. (I have to admit, this particular tape hasn't held up too well for me.)

I haven't been in that many situations lately where people have said the music I like is rubbish, so I'm not sure how I react these days. I think I am a little less attached to my tastes because they have fluctuated so much over the last 20+ years.
