TCBOO/OPO/POO! -- John Cale

"(I Keep A) Close Watch" Completely depressing, and that's what makes it so uplifting. Would have made for a perfect split release on the other side of Reed's "Perfect Day" -- Still, if I was to pick something from his more violent output, I'd choose "Fear Is a Man's Best Friend."

His version of Cable Hogue on Fragments.. is utterly perfect and convulsive.

"Hanky Panky No How" from Paris 1919. Great for mix tapes.

"Andalucia", also great for mix tapes. Lovely atmosphere. Maybe one of my favorite love tunes.

"Buffalo Ballet". I love that drowsy cowboy sound.

I enthusiastically second 'A Child's Christmas in Wales'. The lyrics seem to me as one of Cale's greatest tour de force - seldom have I heard lines so individually cryptic yet creating such an overall clarity. I'd love to be into other people's heads as they listen to that song. What do they see? How do they mentally envision and interpret the words being sung? Windy landscapes, processions of children and their families beneath coloured lights and chimney fumes? Or is this just me?

"Rollaroll" off of Slow Dazzle

b/c:

-soul backup singers
-unexpected 2nd guitar solo
-paroxyms leading up to climactic-fadeout cocaine wailing

Close Watch is ace for sure, but I have to pick 'Chinese Envoy.'

clotion, Monday, 24 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Fear..is..a Man's Best Friend"! Also some of the instrumental stuff off CHURCH OF ANTHRAX, given a broader option!

when I hear a Child's Xmas In wales, I mentally envisage the Dylan Thomas short story "A Child's Xmas in Wales" ;-) However the Cale song is better.

I like Chinese Envoy.

sad and lovely :Amsterdam, Dying on the Vine,Cleo (where Bowie got Sound+vision), cordoba, mr wilson, you know more than i know, style it takes..... violence and dread :Macbeth, leaving it up to you, dead or alive, sudden death , ghost story..... If only the eno collaboration had been 10 years earlier...

sorry, didn't know what POO meant...

oliver neilson, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Gun", despite the lyrics, singing, and anything else not courtesy of Phil Manzanera. OK that's mean, but I can't think of a track off 'New Society' I like any better than the oters, it's all of a piece to me. Then again I would ather see him decapitate a chicken in concert than listen to any of the records, good as they are

"Cordoba" has the best outro cale ever wrote.

Sterling Clover, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
Ok, time to revive, given Hobo Sapiens. The Fragments version of "Dying On the Vine" (such a great record) is totally the precursor of the "Cordoba"-style (also, one of his best). I love him in his placid 70s singer-songwriter mode, like "Corral Moon". It's as if something's just a little bit...off. Also, the very creepy "Hedda Gabbler". And maybe, perhaps "Magritte," though time will tell, I suppose.

He didn't write it, but has anyone here heard the "Frozen Warnings" he does on Nico/Icon?

Wow, difficult question. I'll go with "You Know More Than I Know" for today.

My roommate fucked John Cale's daughter. She was running around my kitchen drunk and naked. Oh, crazy.

Ian Johnson (orion), Saturday, 20 December 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Really? That's...interesting.

I love the Beatles changes in "You Know More Than I Know." And you know, I just downloaded Caribbean Sunset -- not nearly as bad as I was preparing myself for. In fact, not bad at all...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 20 December 2003 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, Ian, wait a minute: are we talking about the girl who looked about 8 y/o in the pictures in What's Welsh For Zen? Because if that's the girl, your roommate might just be guilty of a crime...

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Saturday, 20 December 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a tough one. I was going to say one off of Wrong Way Up, but then I remebered my favorite song on Songs For Drella:

"Style it Takes"

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 20 December 2003 07:36 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fear" may not be my favorite, but it leads off the LP where I really connected with Cale as a solo artist, so I'll say that's the one.

I haven't seen the picture; but she does look fairly young. I'd guess maybe eighteen or nineteen? Her name was/is Ivy.
