Kiss me again by Dinosaur.

I mean, how fuckin good is this track? I can't believe I've been listening to music obsessively for 20 years and not heard it before. Did they release anything else?

That 4 chord sequence after about 2 mins just does me head in.

Arthur Russell sorta changed the name to Dinosaur L after that: 'they' released a 12" ("Go Bang") and an LP (24-24 Music) on Sleeping Bag, the label founded by Russell and William Socolov.

Nuphonic has had some Russell retrospectives in the works, but I've heard they have gone under or are about to go under? In any case, those better see the light of day at some point.

Oh god yes, should have known it was an Arthur Russell track. I was waffling on about another track of his a few days ago on this very board (Treehouse/School bell) Tell me more about this man because what I have heard is too good to believe.

Kris.

arthur was a genius. a much bandied about term but in this instance, totally deserved. he was an avant garde cello player who fell in love with disco and made some of the most out there disco records ever. kiss me again is my favourite - especially arthur's 13 minute mix (not the one on the disco not disco comp which is a far, far inferior version).

you should also check -

  • loose joints - is it all over my face (west end 12") - a total classic

  • dinosaur l - go bang (sleeping bag 12")

  • lola - wax the van - (jump street 12")

  • arthur russell - world of echo (upside / rough trade lp) - totally different but totally sublime. arthur playing cello through echo with occasional minimal percussion and singing. THAT VOICE!

  • arthur russell - another thought (point cd) - from the vaults in the same vein as 'world of echo' but even better. this is in my all time top 5 records ever.

arthur is criminally under represented on the interweb but there is some stuff here

  • arthur - r.i.p.

oh, and in an outrageous bit of self aggrandaisement, what arthur means to me!

Damn. Now you've condemned to search obsessively for that 13 minute mix.

I did track down Walter Gibbons' 11 minute remix of "Doin' the Best That I Can" today. Oh. My. God. Symphonic doesn't do it justice.

Walter Gibbons' 11 minute remix of "Doin' the Best That I Can" today

i've never heard of this - do tell more.

Came out on West End in 78. I think it was one of the first disco records to get a radical "dub"-style remix rather than an extended dancefloor workout. Betty Lavette was a pretty well-known soul singer in the 60s; this was her one foray into disco. Anyway, its a really cool mix because he manages to both keep the original song somewhat intact and deconstruct it into a field of FX.

It starts out with pulsating tribal percussion, sounds like bongo, and these sort of glistening chimes, then the strings sweep in, then the horns, and then the vocal, then the backing vocals... all feels very orchestrated, but also quite spare. Drumclaps build, she goes through the song, essentially, and then the vocal drops out about four minutes in and the rest is just various gorgeous noises, brilliantly arranged... more chimes, a proto-acid bassline, piano, the horn lines develop, the bassline finally arrives, the strings sweep higher, he drops elements in and out, switches them up abruptly... it's to disco what Omni Trio is to rave: purification and elevation.

sounds great - i'll have to track it down. thanks for the ace description.

ha! played the Walter Gibbons Bettye Lavette track for Matos on Saturday - fun to hear others raving about it too! other goodies along those lines: Peech Boys - "Life Is Something Special (Special mix)" (Levan), Sinnamon - "He's Gonna Take You Home (To His House)" (Shep Pettibone) & Serious Intention - "You Don't Know" (Paul Simpson).

Thanks to everyone for their help, If I think the "Disco not disco" version is beyond words then how GOOD must the 13 minute track be.

I'm gonna go see what I can track down.

I'm sure I already have a 12" of that "Wax the van" track so at least I have a starting point.

Can anyone recommend any other Arthur Russell stuff, preferably on cd cos time and money are both a bit short at the moment.

Bloody hell, I haven't been this excited since the Beta band.

Kris England, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

as far as i know, the only cd release is 'another thought'.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-one years ago) link

The Loft Volume One (Nuphonic) has a wonderful 11 minute mix of Is It All Over My Face (and everything else on the comp is great too). The Loft Vol II has Go Bang #5 (and the comp is even better than Vol 1). Disco Not Disco Vol II has a long Walter Gibbons mix of Let's Go Swimming.

I've listened to so much Arthur Russell since I started this thread 6 years ago but I still adore this song. And it's the version on the Disco not disco cd I love most.

On a seperate note, I can't believe, how many of my old threads (2002) have been re-hashed tonight!
