*are* they man + wife, or were they ? has this been officially decided ? i know he's going out with winona or whoever but ...what the ...?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

They're not brother and sister, despite his stage-banter. They're divorced. He took her name.

sean, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What do people find interesting about this "prank"? I can't understand why this one doesn't die on the vine...

Mark, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Glorious Noise site has posted copies of their wedding license and their divorce papers (sorry, no URLs handy). Now can we all move on to peace in the Middle East or something?

Lee G, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i find nothing interesting of this prank or of their music.

Chris, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah just another divorced rock duo pretending to be siblings *yawn* how could anyone be interested in that? face it, it's a good gimmick. a pseudo-incestuous relationship or a failed marriage or some cross btwn the 2, it's faulkner, it's tennessee wms. it fits with their whole southern gothic schtick. more bands should have their own creation myths.

fritz, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

fuck the creation myth, their appearance at the MTV movie awards is in rotation on MTV as a video

Steve K, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what does that have to do with the brother/sister-husband/wife story?

fritz, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

it's a good gimmick

For two seconds.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Didn't Quasi do the same thing?

Mark, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

people are still talking about it (cf this thread) after their 3rd record, ned. got them into time magazine. seems to be working to me.

fritz, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The thing is, I never even heard they were brother & sister except in pieces talking about how they used to be husband in wife. So the element of surprise was missing.

Mark, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Er...husband and wife.

Mark, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only reason they're talking about it in many cases is because not everyone knows the real story yet. I have no problem with reinvention -- that's part and parcel of modern music, god knows I love enough people who have done their own version of spin on things over the moons. But this particular gimmick just makes me do one of those 'ha, how funny, ha ha' reactions.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"not everyone knows the real story yet" = the hallmark of a good, enduring story

the thing is, why is everyone so ready to dismiss everything as boring ESPECIALLY stuff that is actually interesting. rock duo (!) posing as brother and sister (!) but lying to the press (!), actually divorced couple (!) = boring!?

it's the same deal with the strokes: son of scandal-ridden modeling kingpin (!) starts band with swiss boarding school mates (!) uses double reverse brit invasion strategy (!) to live dissolute rock lifestyle (!) = boring!?

fritz, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

How could somebody not know the real story?! I never hear the "fake" story referenced unless its as an explanation of the "real" story.

Mark, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the fact that they are lying is interesting to people whether or not they ever believed the lie. I don't think a lot of people really believed that Sun Ra was really from outer space, but it made for better interviews than saying he was from Kansas City.

fritz, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hahahaha. ice t/n.w.a. never killed a cop either.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And did you know that 'David Bowie' isn't his real name?

I admit I wouldn't be quite so bemused about it if I hadn't heard that Jack White is still pretending otherwise. It's like, "Dude, invent a new story or something."

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And did you know that 'David Bowie' isn't his real name?

WHAT?!? Oh, great, now you're gonna tell me he's not really gay! God, Ned.

Arthur, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I hear Elvis was just spotted at Target buying some aloe vera infused toilet paper.

Chris, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And a Sprouse boogie board!

Arthur, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The White Stripes only play the brother sister/husband wife cardto get more hits from incest searches on Google.

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark ... ever seen 'The House of Yes' ?

Dare, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

House of no...I mean, no I haven't.

Mark, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

It's this odd, funny movie w/Parker Posey in it, about a dysfunctional household, incest, etc. I was going to suggest that some people have a psychological curiosity/attraction to those sorts of issues, but prefer to see it acted out in third person, rather than dredge up those thoughts from the subconscious and think about them directly.

Dare, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Here's one way to sum up their relationship: Partners in a marketing strategy. I do like their music, though. OPO: "We're Going to Be Friends" - Superb change of pace... very cute song. I must say that I find Daniel Smith's (of the Danielson Family) Black Francis impersonation more original. Oh, and the Danielson band concept is more original as well. The White Stripes would be well-served if they dropped the act. Maybe they could strike a permanent deal with Lego and just be Lego people... a la Gorillaz.

Tim DiGravina, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The backstory is more interesting than the music, for me. But duos in music are always inherently interesting anyway.

Tom, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

haha tom is a big proclaimers fan (i assume everyone knows the real story behind their "twins" prank btw)

mark s, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I wonder if they'll stop dressing in red and white at some point. I hope not.

Sean, Tuesday, 25 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark s., why would you assume everyone knows about the proclaimers' "twinks" prank ?

Dare, Wednesday, 26 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I thought the Proclaimers were robots....Like Kraftwerk

brg30, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I love White Blood Cells. One of the best albums I've heard in ages. 2001 was the best year for music in quite a while in my humble opinion.

Has anyone seen The White Stripes live?

Calum Robert, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Guess I should add that I thought 'The House of Yes' was pants.

Calum Robert, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ive never heard any dispute over what quasi is/was... they were married, are now divorced and are in a band together. that's all, i believe. :-)

Ron, Thursday, 27 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)
