THAT rhythm

i'm a sucker for it: it being the rhythmic pattern on missy elliot's 'lick shots' and basement jaxx's 'u can't stop me'. it's an emphasis on the first and third beats in a bar, so that a song sounds slow and fast at the same time.

I don't know "U Can't Stop Me" but I just listened to "Lick Shots." I'm not sure what this would be called, but it doesn't seem particularly unusual (not that you can't like it). If anything, the occasional syncopation here--at least I think that's what it is-- keeps things interesting.

it appears to be the presence of short 8:4 rhythms with the overriding loping 4:4 (the 1 and 3 stesses you recognise). its a wicked effect as a listener can engage with the faster beat, in a neu-ish hypnotic propulsion, and can also feel the grind of the main feel.

shostackovich uses this quite a lot, as does squarepusher in beep street

Omni Trio called it "soulstep" or something. And yeah it's often fabulous.
