If you could pick just one year in music you were allowed to listen to, which would it be?

I think I could handle just listening to 1971 for the rest of my life, if I absolutely had to pick one.

Mordy, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 18:23 (fourteen years ago) link

1977 or 1978 probably.

Do reissues count?

StanM, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 18:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I would think for the year that the music actually got first released.

Alex in SF, Tuesday, 7 July 2009 18:29 (fourteen years ago) link

69 or 70 would be fine by me. only about a zillion cool records from those years i haven't heard yet. i'll be firm and say 1970. think of the funk and the soul and the art-rock and the psych. and think of brazil. and africa. and japan. and germany. i'd be busy for years.

I've spent all of this year listening almost exclusively to stuff from around '70-'71 and don't feel I've exhausted them yet. To choose one-- '71, so uch great Country music (as well as so much great everything else.)

"so uch"= such

1974

matinee, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link

a little more arguing for the year you choose wouldn't harm, i guess. why 1974, matinee? it doesn't seem very attractive to me. roxy music wasn't fresh anymore and prog-rock blooming.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 8 July 2009 21:15 (fourteen years ago) link

1974 because some of my favorite records came out then (ie, Wyatt's Rock Bottom, King Crimson Red, Steve Reice Six Pianos/Drumming, Neil Young On the Beach) and also because there seemed to be a sort of across the board adventurousness melding with pop sensibilities that just really appeals to me. While a lot of the records are very good but lean towards the mediocre, I think I still like exploring that year more than almost any other.

how could i forget about on the beach? i had difficulties finding my fave from 1974. in the end i went for steve reich's drumming. but there is also court and spark and taking tiger mountain. not too shabby really.
