CTI Records S/D

A quick search of the ILX archives reveals Gareth downloading 'crappy 70s CTI type shit', but what do the rest of the panel think? I bought this compilation 'The Master Collection' and admittedly a lot of it is quite shit, but some of it is good, notably Esther Phillips' rehab anthem 'Home is Where the Hatred Is' which is TOUGH and HARD-HITTING. So I bought her album 'What a Diff'rence a Day Makes' which is neither tough nor hard-hitting, in fact it gets on my tits a bit. So which CTI albums are worth investigating? The cover of Kenny Burrell's 'God Bless the Child' features a hard-hitting picture of a helicopter, but what does it sound like? Any information and/or opinions appreciated.

Fuck, I was about to start a thread on Rudy Van Gelder's monster! I've got a Grant Green album which is probably the worst ever made! 'Funky' versions of Simon & Garfunkel songs, you name it! I've also got this Paul Desmond album that sounds like a cross between Mantovani and CSN&Y. How the mighty fell, eh?
However, even the worst CTI is better than the best ECM. It's a production thing. I cannot physically bear to listen to that ultra-separated classical- type production in those contexts, bring on Stanley Turrentine and Geiorge Benson any day!

Thank you, Gareth. I blame the search engine.

I knew we did this. "Home is where the Hatred is" is on Esther Phillips very very great album From a Whisper to a Scream, the first of a run of 4 amazing LPs. What a Difference a Day Makes was early disco, and not as good, but not bad. Her vocals were great. Nina Simone's "Baltimore" is worth checking out. CTI put a commercial sheen on everything, which didn't always work. Freddie Hubbard's "Red Clay" is good too. OK, see other thread, etc.

i have since bought that kenny burrell record, because of the song 'be yourself' which i like very much. can't really comment beyond that, i'm afraid.

oh but what that song sounds like: a sunday spring stroll in the park, with a string ensemble a few steps behind... ok the next song is on now... its a bit more low down, funkier, strings still there but more menacing. more like classic bob james arrangements (but this = don sebesky)

P.S. i am surprised that the other cti thread doesnt show up on google. i just tried.
